N ur wenigen ist der Begriff geläufig und doch liefert der Name der Frankfurter Eis-
diele einen konkreten Hinweis auf die Geschichte hinter dem Laden, denn „anti-
podean“ bedeutet soviel wie „von der gegenüberliegenden Seite des Erdballs stam-
mend“. Rachel Dodoo-Mehl ist Australierin und vermisste nach ihrem Umzug von
Down Under nach Deutschland ein gewohnt gutes, traditionelles Eis – so wurde aus der
Einwanderin kurzerhand eine Eisproduzentin und Unternehmensgründerin mit dem
Ziel, das beste Eis der Stadt herzustellen. Um Passanten in das kleine Ladenlokal zu
locken, tauchte Studio Aberja den Verkaufsraum der ambitionierten Gründerin in Apri-
cot- und Goldtöne. Farbig verspiegelte Lamellen entlang der Decke sollen den Blick von
der Straße zum Verkaufstresen und bis in die gläserne Manufaktur lenken. Die Ver-
kaufsfläche selbst ist klar strukturiert und auch dank zahlreicher hochglänzender Ober-
flächen und Messingelemente hell und wertig ausgestaltet. Als unumwundener Mittel-
punkt des Geschehens erhielt der große Eistresen eine ornamental perforierte, weiße
Blechverkleidung, hinter der ein kräftiges Orange hervorschimmert. Ein abgerundetes
Erscheinungsbild gelingt mit einer ebenfalls orangefarbenen Marmorarbeitsplatte. Be-
sonders angenehm: Die in die Platte eingelassenen Speiseeiskühler machen die lichte
Raumwirkung und den Entstehungsprozess der Ware zum visuellen Protagonisten. hs

O nly few people are familiar with the term and yet the name of the Frankfurt
ice-cream parlour gives a hint to the history behind the store: “antipodean”
means “from the other side of the globe”. Rachel Dodoo-Mehl is Australian and,
after moving to Germany, was missing her usual good, traditional ice cream. And
thus, the immigrant spontaneously became an ice-cream manufacturer and com-
pany founder with the goal of producing the best ice-cream in the city. To attract
passers-by into the small store, Studio Aberja immersed the sales room of the am-
bitious founder into shades of apricot and gold. Colourfully mirrored lamellae along
the ceiling are to direct the eye from the street to the sales counter and all the way
into the transparent manufacture. The sales area itself is clearly structured and has
a bright and high-quality design, also due to numerous very glossy surfaces and
brass elements. As the definite hub of the action, the large ice-cream counter was
equipped with an ornamentally perforated, white metal-sheet covering behind
which strong orange shimmers. A harmonious overall appearance is achieved with
a likewise orange marble worktop. Particularly pleasant: ice-cream coolers integra-
ted in the top turn the bright room effect and the production process of the goods
