E s gibt sie noch, die klassischen Eckkneipen und -bistros. Manchmal bedarf es aber
eines zweiten Blicks, um zu erkennen, dass neue darunter sind. 119 Jahre lang be-
wirtete das Café Bos nahe dem Amsterdamer Vondelpark Generationen von Gästen. Vor
einem Jahr hat diese Institution unter dem Namen Bonnie neu eröffnet. Das Innenar-
chitekturbüro Studio Modijefsky – 2009 von Esther Stam gegründet und heute acht (!)
Frauen stark – verwandelte die Lokalität in einen Mix aus Café, Bar und Bistro. Und die-
sem liegen die typischen Insignien tradierter Bistros zugrunde – Fliesen, Spiegel, Holz-
vertäfelungen, Neonlichter. Zwei große, bogenförmige Fenster mit gelben Gläsern tau-
chen das Bonnie in warmes Licht. Die Rundungen der Fassade finden sich innen wieder,
am augenfälligsten in der Rückwand der Bar – in Form glänzend dunkelroter Fliesen,
gerahmt von korallenfarbenem Neonlicht. Ein großflächig gemusterter Fliesenteppich
in Gelb, Grün, Weiß und Schwarz geleitet die Gäste nahtlos ins Souterrain. Dort ver-
sprühen mit Eichenholz vertäfelte Wände, in diese integrierte Spiegel sowie sechseckige
Leuchten, orangefarbene Wandfliesen, eine weinrote Lederbank und klassische Bistro-
Stühle aus Holz jede Menge Retro-Touch. Auf dem Mezzanin – ideal für private Events –
setzt sich diese Designsprache fort. Alles wirkt dort etwas feierlicher: Die Decke ist
bespannt mit burgunderfarbenem Stoff, der Boden belegt mit Eichenholzparkett.

T hey still exist, the classic corner pubs and bistros. Sometimes, however, a second
glance is needed to realize that there are new ones among them. For 119 years, the
Café Bos close to the Amsterdam Vondelpark has been serving generations of guests. A
year ago, it reopened under the name Bonnie. The Studio Modijefsky design office –
founded by Esther Stam in 2009 and today an eight-(!) women company – turned the
venue into a mixture of a café, a bar and a bistro. And this is based on the typical insi-
gnia of traditional bistros – tiles, mirrors, wood panelling, neon lamps. Two large, arched
windows with yellow-stained glass immerse the Bonnie in a warm light. The curvatures
of the façade are found again inside, in the most striking way at the back of the bar in
the form of shiny dark-red tiles framed by coral-coloured neon light. An extensively pat-
terned tile carpet in yellow, green, white and black seamlessly accompanies the guests
down to the basement. This is where oak-panelled walls, mirrors integrated in them as
well as hexagonal luminaires, orange wall tiles, a burgundy-red leather bench and clas-
sic bistro chairs of wood exude ample retro touch. On the mezzanine – ideal for private
events – this design language is continued. There, everything looks somewhat more fe-
stive: The ceiling is covered with burgundy-coloured fabric, the floor has oak parquet.
