                                                                                     The Classic Rock Café in Stuttgart has a loyal clientele.
                                                                                     This summer, however, the regular guests will not only
                                                                                     have to get used to partying under corona conditions,
                                                                                     but also to a new location. Stuttgart-based interior de-
                                                                                     signer Cyrus Ghanai was responsible for the interior
                                                                                     design. He focused on an atmospheric and yet robust
                                                                                     design — embellished with many charming details.



                                                                                     T   he Classic Rock Café, CRC for short, is an institution of Stuttgart’s
                                                                                         nightlife scene. For 25 years, the basement of the old Horten depart-
                                                                                     ment store has been a hive of activity. This used to be the site of the le-
                                                                                     gendary Schocken department store, designed by Erich Mendelsohn,
                                                                                     which had to make way for the Horten building in 1960. Now the end
                                                                                     has also come for Horten’s successor Kaufhof. At least the 1970s exten-
                                                                                     sion, which accommodates the CRC in the basement, is currently being
                                                                                     demolished to make room for a new building. The CRC operators were
                                                                                     therefore searching for new premises. They found what they were loo-
                                                                                     king for in an urban B-level at the transition from the city centre to the
                                                                                     university district. Here, the Börsenplatz underground station opens up
                                                                                     to the sky in a large semicircle. The low level was previously home to a
                                                                                     Mexican restaurant; this summer the new CRC will be opened here. So
                                                                                     the guests will still find the familiar basement location; on the other
                                                                                     hand, the new location will feature an outdoor area for the first time. For
                                                                                     the redesign, the operators brought in the Stuttgart-based interior desi-
                                                                                     gner Cyrus Ghanai, to whom the city already owes several gastronomic
                                                                                     highlights. Ghanai structured the 325-square-metre floor area of the new
                                                                                     CRC with large podiums. In the depth of the room is the raised lounge
                                                                                     area, from where the view can freely roam through the restaurant. Be-
                                                                                     hind the entrance, a small restaurant wing was created, also elevated,
                                                                                     which is additionally screened off by a chain curtain from Kriskadecor.
                                                                                     The central element of the new CRC, however, is the huge bar counter in
                                                                                     the centre of the space. The two striking copper funnels hovering above
                                                                                     it have been moved from the old location to the new one. Each area of
                                                                                     the room has its own furniture, adapted to the respective intended use.
                                                                                     For example, Ghanai designed tables of different heights — here for ea-
                                                                                     ting, there for chilling out, elsewhere for relaxing together at a height
                                                                                     halfway between sitting and standing. The design of the walls is also par-
                                                                                     ticularly successful: logos of famous rock bands were alienated and ar-
                                                                                     ranged on strips of wallpaper. At first glance, this looks mainly decorative
