BAR HOTEL RESTAURANT TECHNISCHER AUSBAU • TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS
T his event location in Guldental in Rhineland-Palatinate is characterised by a spe-
cial interplay between rural building stock and modern design. From the very
beginning, the clients asked for a conscious presentation and staging of contrasts.
Their services should now be extended for weddings and family celebrations and be
available to companies for team-building events. The former main and farm building
of the property, which was used as a barn and horse stable in the past, was the starting
point for the idea of applying a special approach to rethink and redesign an event loca-
tion. It soon became clear that the space required for the necessary functional areas
was insufficient, so that an appropriate extension had to be created, which at the same
time gives the building a modern character. Since the barn is surrounded by adjoining
courtyard and garden areas as well as parts of existing buildings, the extension could
only be positioned on one side and in one direction.
The former barn is given a modern companion
The gable wall of the barn was opened as much as possible in order to insert the new
building at this point, which surrounds, penetrates and connects with the existing

brick masonry and the visible wooden structures in the ceiling and column area, form
a characteristic focus determined the necessity of a modern and quiet new building

with a fine and light, airy polarity. The design of the interior and exterior space in
almost virginal white was to contrast with the masculine dark colour scheme of the
barn and have a calming effect. With the help of a sliding system, the large window
area of the new building can be opened and the interior space extended with the adjoi-
ning exterior space. In combination with the frameless fixed glazing and a concealed
flush roof window, it is possible to respond to the various lighting situations that sur-
round the building during the day. The resulting new visual relationships also enable
users to engage in a previously concealed, exciting dialogue with the outside world.
The new building with its asymmetrical roof shape appears like an independent work
of art due to the detailed planning of the connections and the use of materials. For
example, the internal, concealed roof drainage was solved with special folded metal
sheets and the roof overhangs were extremely reduced. The exterior plaster finish with
a lotus effect coating additionally prevents the accumulation of dirt on the building.
The floor plan shows how the building connects to the existing structure both inside
and outside. The interior fitout of the white building was carried out almost in a classic
manner in drywall construction with suspended and mounted elements.
Creative details complement the new overall appearance
„Bauen im Bestand ist wohl die größte To avoid additional distractions, the new ventilation system was integrated into the

therefore fulfils various tasks while remaining a calm design element. It was equally

ous colour and a subtle structure. Since oak wood was also used for the barn, it was
the only additional material used for the interior design of the new building. A side-
board with doors was designed with false joints to prevent the unsuspecting observer
from recognizing the actual operational elements and thus prevent unauthorized ope-
ning. This eliminates the need for locks and at the same time allows for a homogene-
ous furniture front. The construction of the barn was a little more complex, as the old
floor had to be completely removed for the new underfloor heating system with top
floor covering. The desire to maintain the visible beam construction also required insu-
lation and, at the same time, optimisation of the roof truss for the installation of the
necessary wiring. Furthermore, the entire masonry was exposed and the joints were
painstakingly scraped out. The old jointing material served as the main component for
the subsequent new grouting. The bricks from the previous opening were cleaned and
used for the missing parts in the barn walls, so that a beautiful exposed masonry in
the style of the former construction method was created. The two solid wooden barn
gates—facing the courtyard and the garden—were replaced by glazed aluminium ele-
ments to direct more daylight into the barn. The offset central part of the barn, which
was once served to feed the animals, is now used to cater for the guests: Here, a two-
part counter block with spatula-applied brass finish dominates the interior and, at the
