COMPARTMENTSCHULE
IN BERLIN
A pioneering new school building modelled on the Berlin
Compartmentschule was completed on Allee der Kosmo-
nauten in Lichtenberg: ADKosmos – the largest project in
the Berlin school-construction initiative – was realized by
PPAG architects. The innovative spatial and pedagogical
concept for 1,600 pupils connects an integrated secondary
school and a grammar school via two sports halls.
T he general planner competition which had been launched by
the Howoge housing association in 2019 originally envisaged two
schools and a double sports hall in Berlin. PPAG architects won with
their concept of combining everything in one building so as not to sepa-
rate the school routes of the children from the neighbourhood who were
attending either the secondary school or the grammar school once they
arrive in front of the school. The design envisages two sports halls, one
stacked on top of the other, at the centre of five identical “compartment”
wings – three for the Integrated Secondary School (ISS) in the west, two
for the grammar school in the east. The sports halls are directly accessib-

school for break kickabout, physics experiments or joint leisure activi-
ties. Three entrances with lifts ensure that both schools can function
completely independently, but can also collaborate to whatever extent
they wish. The AdKosmos is an all-day school, with the compartments
forming their own small schools within the school, which promote cross-
year and cross-class collaboration. Each of these learning- and living
spaces is designed for around 110 students and their teachers. The atri-
um forms the central, naturally lit workspace of each compartment. Four
main group- and division rooms are attached to it like puzzle pieces,
along with other rooms that are directly connected to the atrium. The
functional, atmospheric spaces within these units are flexible regarding
their use, they adapt well to all learning- and leisure scenarios and are
supported by mobile shelving and furniture elements as a part of the
equipment that can be used as required. The connecting centrepiece
of the ADKosmos is the 900-square-metre piazza on the ground floor
below the sports halls. This is used by both schools as a theatre, event,
workshop and construction space. Equipped with stage technology and
flexible partition options, this multipurpose room can be opened in sum-
mer and thus serve as a covered open space. The piazza, including the
canteens and libraries, as well as the sports halls, can also be used by
