CHILDREN‘S HOME

Y ou could almost forget that you are in an industrial area. The outdoor
area of the company day-care centre for Vector Informatik in Stutt-
gart-Weilimdorf looks like an outdoor paradise with its garden, modelled
terrain and trees. This spacious, south-west facing outdoor area was
made possible by schleicher.ragaller architekten moving the building
close to Motorstrasse and the Lindenbach stream running parallel to it.
The area, where children from four day-care groups are now looked after,
used to be a company car park. The special quality of the single-storey,
elongated new building in timber construction lies in its floor plan and
in its high-quality materials. Under a large shared roof, the group rooms
are staggered in a zigzag course, creating triangular areas in the form
of “play oases”, such as a picnic area or one for building with cushi-
ons. Analogously, equally triangular, brick-paved, covered terraces also
open onto the garden. You won’t find any typical access corridors in this
day-care centre. The children’s house is distinguished by zones that are
sometimes narrower, sometimes wider, sometimes higher, sometimes
lower, visual connections, plenty of daylight through generous windows
and skylights, as well as flexibly usable zones that can be connected to
one another. By means of a concertina folding wall, for example, the
central dining area with a counter can be opened up to the corridor,
creating a “marketplace”. The group rooms are characterized by custom-
made wooden built-in furniture and deep windows with a view. Glazed
wooden surfaces create a warm, high-quality atmosphere everywhere,
while brick walls increase the storage mass, improve the indoor clima-
te and are interesting to the touch. Sustainability is a central theme of
the project. Renewable raw materials, energy-efficient technologies and
a thoughtful interior design create a day-care centre climate that offers
children and educators an inspiring learning- and working atmosphere
every day. In addition to its commitment to its employees, Vector Infor-
matik also demonstrates great social commitment: in the forum of this
AIT issue, we present the learning workshop for young refugees (p. 12)
