IN WEIL AM RHEIN

V on A wie Ando bis Z wie Zaha: Seit den 1980er-Jahren reihen sich die Werke großer
ArchitektInnen auf dem Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein aneinander wie Perlen an
einer Schnur. Zu den frühen Bauten, die Ex-CEO Rolf Fehlbaum nach einem 1981 auf dem
Produktionsgelände entfachten Großbrand in Auftrag gegeben hatte, gehört die am west-
lichen Rand des Areals situierte Fabrikhalle (1994) mit dekonstruktivistischer Dachbrücke
und roter Klinkerfassade von Álvaro Siza. Das Achsraster dieses 11.600 Quadratmeter
großen und sieben Meter hohen Innenraums erlaubte es, entlang der Flanken geräumige
Bereiche abzutrennen und zu vermieten, sodass die Halle seit Kurzem auch die Räum-
lichkeiten des neuen, dualen Studiengangs Architektur der DHBW Lörrach beherbergt
(siehe AIT 4.2024). Architekt Florian Stroh und Bauherrenvertreter Christian Germadnik
planten gemeinsam und in enger Absprache mit Studio Álvaro Siza einen zweigeschossi-
gen Holzeinbau aus regional bezogener, weiß-pigmentierter Esche, der eine beachtliche
architektonische Eigenständigkeit besitzt und den Hallenabschnitt nun der Höhe nach
gliedert: Eingangs öffnet sich eine breite Treppe als offenes Auditorium. Die Galerieebene
darüber nimmt Arbeitsplätze und einen Zeichensaal für Studierende auf; unten befinden
sich offene Werkstätten, Seminarräume und ein Sekretariat. Eine minimalinvasive und
doch wirkungsvolle Intervention, die vollständig demontierbar und flexibel nutzbar ist!
F rom A for Ando to Z for Zaha: Since the 1980s, the works of great architects have
been lined up on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein like pearls on a string. Among
the early buildings commissioned by former CEO Rolf Fehlbaum after a major fire on
the production site in 1981 is the factory building (1994) located at the western edge of
the site by Álvaro Siza, featuring a deconstructivist roof bridge and red brick façade. The
axial grid of the interior space, with a floor area of 11,600 square metres and a height of
seven metres, made it possible to partition off spacious areas along the sides and rent
them out. Most recently, the hall also became the home of the new dual study course in
architecture of DHBW Lörrach (see AIT 4.2024). Architect Florian Stroh and client repre-
sentative Christian Germadnik collaborated closely with Studio Álvaro Siza to plan a
two-storey wooden structure made of regionally sourced, white-pigmented ash, which is
characterised by considerable architectural independence and now divides the hall sec-
tion vertically: At the entrance, a wide staircase opens up into an open auditorium. The
gallery level above accommodates workstations and a drawing room for students; below
are open workshops, seminar rooms and a secretary’s office. A minimally invasive yet
impactful intervention that can be completely dismantled and allows flexible utilisation!
