SECONDARY SCHOOL
CHLIRIET IN OBERGLATT
Red is an apple, yellow is the sun, blue is the sky, and
purple is a plum, green is a tree, I know all the colours
you can see. This nursery rhyme quickly comes to mind
at the sight of the new Chliriet school building by Edelaar
Mosayebi Inderbitzin Architekt*innen. The architects
created a pronounced colour scheme that already reve-
als on the outside what continues inside the building.
T he team, operating under the name BS+EMI Architektenpartner for
this project, admittedly chose an unusual colour range, but not by
pure chance. Each type of building element has been given its own co-
lour for conceptual reasons — white or even the material’s own colour
are not to be found anywhere. And thus, the designers claim, it is the sy-
stem and not the constructive order that comes to the fore in the archi-
tectural design. To achieve this, material samples were set up and pin-
ned to the walls in preliminary stages in the joint office of Edelaar Mo-
sayebi Inderbitzin (EMI) and Baumberger Stegmeier (BS). Now the struc-
tural components are painted red-orange, plastered walls are finished in
pink, the windows are petrol blue, desks shine in bright green and the
stair stringers are purple, while ventilation pipes are navy blue. Never-
theless, the flat, linear volume of the school building does not appear
playful at all. It complements the open structure of the Chliriet school
complex. The two-storey, timber-framed building is located along the
boundary path of the site and, together with the existing multi-purpose
hall, creates a large outdoor break and play area. The cantilevered flying
roof gives the architecture its own expression, making reference to the
existing building with its overhang. Starting from the room programme,
the functions of the building are distributed over two floors, with all
classrooms facing east towards the cultural landscape: The teachers'
rooms, the special classrooms for handicraft and needlework lessons,
and the science rooms with interior material rooms are located on the
ground floor. An elongated access hall with two main entrances serves
as a central arrival, meeting and distribution space. All standard class-
rooms are located on the upper floor. Connectable group rooms with
openings to the break room complement the available spaces. Repeating
units are lined up to form simple room groups: two rooms each form a
cluster with separate access. About 260 pupils will find a very special
learning environment comprising almost 5,000 square metres, which,
thanks to its independent colour scheme, is very likely to lead to a strong
