                                                                                     SECONDARY SCHOOL

                                                                                     CHLIRIET IN OBERGLATT






                                                                                     Red is an apple, yellow is the sun, blue is the sky, and
                                                                                     purple is a plum, green is a tree, I know all the colours
                                                                                     you can see. This nursery rhyme quickly comes to mind
                                                                                     at the sight of the new Chliriet school building by Edelaar
                                                                                     Mosayebi Inderbitzin Architekt*innen. The architects
                                                                                     created a pronounced colour scheme that already reve-
                                                                                     als on the outside what continues inside the building.



                                                                                     T  he team, operating under the name BS+EMI Architektenpartner for
                                                                                        this project, admittedly chose an unusual colour range, but not by
                                                                                     pure chance. Each type of building element has been given its own co-
                                                                                     lour for conceptual reasons — white or even the material’s own colour
                                                                                     are not to be found anywhere. And thus, the designers claim, it is the sy-
                                                                                     stem and not the constructive order that comes to the fore in the archi-
                                                                                     tectural design. To achieve this, material samples were set up and pin-
                                                                                     ned to the walls in preliminary stages in the joint office of Edelaar Mo-
                                                                                     sayebi Inderbitzin (EMI) and Baumberger Stegmeier (BS). Now the struc-
                                                                                     tural components are painted red-orange, plastered walls are finished in
                                                                                     pink, the windows are petrol blue, desks shine in bright green and the
                                                                                     stair stringers are purple, while ventilation pipes are navy blue. Never-
                                                                                     theless, the flat, linear volume of the school building does not appear
                                                                                     playful at all. It complements the open structure of the Chliriet school
                                                                                     complex. The two-storey, timber-framed building is located along the
                                                                                     boundary path of the site and, together with the existing multi-purpose
                                                                                     hall, creates a large outdoor break and play area. The cantilevered flying
                                                                                     roof gives the architecture its own expression, making reference to the
                                                                                     existing building with its overhang. Starting from the room programme,
                                                                                     the functions of the building are distributed over two floors, with all
                                                                                     classrooms facing east towards the cultural landscape: The teachers'
                                                                                     rooms, the special classrooms for handicraft and needlework lessons,
                                                                                     and the science rooms with interior material rooms are located on the
                                                                                     ground floor. An elongated access hall with two main entrances serves
                                                                                     as a central arrival, meeting and distribution space. All standard class-
                                                                                     rooms are located on the upper floor. Connectable group rooms with
                                                                                     openings to the break room complement the available spaces. Repeating
                                                                                     units are lined up to form simple room groups: two rooms each form a
                                                                                     cluster with separate access. About 260 pupils will find a very special
                                                                                     learning environment comprising almost 5,000 square metres, which,
                                                                                     thanks to its independent colour scheme, is very likely to lead to a strong
