Z entrumsnah inmitten der Leipziger Innenstadt entstand nach Plänen des ortsansäs-
sigen Architekturbüros Schulz und Schulz ein neues Schulgebäude. Die Grundschule
am Addis-Abeba-Platz – benannt nach der äthiopischen Partnerstadt – ergänzt einen feh-
lenden Baustein in der städtischen Bebauung. In Proportion, Höhe und Architekturspra-
che wird die Umgebungsbebauung aufgenommen und erzeugt eine städtebauliche Struk-
turierung des vormals unübersichtlichen Umfelds. Das kompakte Gebäudeensemble, be-
stehend aus zwei sich durchdringenden Körpern, begrenzt eine freie Fläche, die somit
einen sicheren Pausenhof formt. Die innerstädtische Architektur aus den Anfängen des
20. Jahrhunderts aufgreifend, wählten die Architekten für die Baukörper unterschiedlich
gefärbte Klinker. Die Zweifarbigkeit der Ziegelsteine unterstreicht die verschiedenen Funk-
tionen – Schule und Sporthallen. Vorspringende Klinkersteine, Bänder, Stürze und frei ge-
formte Dachspeier greifen historische Elemente auf und knüpfen an die Mauerwerkskunst
früherer Epochen an. Im Inneren wird das zentrale, alle Geschosse miteinander verbin-
dende Atrium zum Herzstück des Schulhauses, das sich im Erdgeschoss zu einem Thea-
terraum aufspannt. Holz und farbiges Linoleum, ökologische und recyclingfähige Bau-
stoffe im Inneren des gesamten Hauses schaffen zusammen mit den roten und gelben
Ziegeln der Fassaden eine warme und sinnliche Atmosphäre für das Leben in der Schule.

C lose to the Leipzig’ city centre, a new school building was constructed according to
the plans of the local architectural firm Schulz und Schulz. The primary school at
Addis-Abeba-Platz — named after the Ethiopian twin city — adds a missing element to
the urban development. In terms of proportions, height and architectural vocabulary,
the new building relates to the surrounding architectural context and creates an urban
structure in the previously confusing surroundings. The compact building ensemble,
consisting of two intersecting volumes, delimits an open area, which is thus turned into
a sheltered playground. Referencing the inner-city architecture from the early twentieth
century, the architects chose differently coloured bricks for the individual buildings. The
two colours of the bricks emphasise the different functions — school and sports halls.
Protruding bricks, bands, lintels and freely shaped rainspouts echo historical elements
and tie in with the masonry art of earlier eras. Inside, the central atrium connecting all
the storeys becomes the heart of the school building, opening up into a theatre space
on the ground floor. Wood and coloured linoleum, ecological and recyclable building
materials inside the entire building, together with the red and yellow bricks used for
the façades, create a warm and sensual atmosphere for life at this school.
