L ocalworks ist eine Baugemeinschaft, die sich für ökologisches Bauen in Ostafrika
einsetzt. „Wir glauben, dass gut durchdachte Gebäude einen positiven Einfluss auf
die Gemeinschaft haben können“, so das Team über die eigene Arbeit. Dabei basiert
jedes Projekt auf hausinternen Forschungsergebnissen zu umweltfreundlichen Bautech-
niken, die das Büro auch an Interessierte vor Ort weitergibt. Gemeinsam mit einer Com-
munity an fähigen Handwerkern entstehen so Projekte wie das Kloster Our Lady of Vic-
toria, das ursprünglich 1952 in Kenia gegründet wurde. Wegen politischer Unruhen sie-
delten die Mönche des Zisterzienser-Trappistenordens jedoch 2008 nach Uganda über.
Der neue Gebäudekomplex besteht aus aneinandergesetzten, introvertierten Hofstruk-
turen, der Platz für eine wachsende Mönchsgemeinschaft bietet und dafür das Noviziat,
ein Torhaus, ein Gästehaus und eine Kirche umfasst. Letztere bildet das Zentrum der
Anlage und verfügt über ein Tropendach, das vor Regen schützt und mit Photovoltaik
belegt der Stromversorgung dient. Für die Gestaltung des Komplexes war den Zisterzien-
sern wichtig, dass die entstehenden Räume nicht von Gebet und Arbeit ablenken. Ge-
baut wurde das Kloster aus am Standort verfügbaren Lehmziegeln. Für ein möglichst
angenehmes Klima sind alle Gebäude passiv belüftet und mit reflektierendem Dachma-
terial wie auch verschatteten Fenstern und Wandelgängen ausgestattet. hs

L ocalworks is a joint building venture committed to ecological building in East
Africa. “We believe that well-designed buildings can have a positive impact on
the community,” the team members say about their work. Each project is based on
in-house research into environmentally friendly building techniques that the office
also shares with People of the local population. Together with a community of skilled
craftsmen, projects such as the Our Lady of Victoria Monastery, which was originally
founded in Kenya in 1952, come into existence. Due to political unrest, however,
the monks of the Cistercian Trappist Order moved to Uganda in 2008. The new buil-
ding complex consists of adjoining introverted courtyard structures, providing
space for a growing community of monks, and includes the novitiate, a gatehouse,
a guesthouse and a church. The latter forms the centre of the complex and has a
tropical roof that protects against rain and is covered with photovoltaics to provide
electricity. For the design of the complex, it was important to the Cistercians that
the resulting rooms should not distract from prayer and work. The monastery was
built from clay bricks available on site. To ensure the most pleasant climate possible,
all buildings are passively ventilated and equipped with reflective roofing material
