the masonry in the area of the extensions are only recognisable at second glance. The
compositional grid of the original complex, which is based on the overriding basic geo-
metry of a brick, is also respected in the continuation of the architecture.
Connection of old and new without visible breaks
The surface composition and material canon of the 1970s also define the interior de-
sign of all the newly added building sections. In keeping with the architectural “way of Schnitt durch den Hof • Section
thinking” of the period, green and blue shades, exposed brick and dark real wood sur-
faces were used here. The architects thus show a respectful approach to the design
principles of the time the buildings were constructed and to the work of the recently
deceased architect Josef Stöckli from Cham. This is also noteworthy and topical from
the monument preservation point of view, since it is only recently that buildings from
the 1970s and 1980s worthy of protection have increasingly become the focus of atten-
tion. However, since large parts of the stock of public buildings were constructed du-
ring this period and in a similar style, and since there is a glaring renovation backlog
in this area in particular, the refurbishment of the Röhrliberg school complex can be
considered exemplary. Even against the background of constantly changing pedagogi-
cal concepts, a comparable extension that takes advantage of existing programmes can
contribute a great deal to current problem solving. The preservation and sustainable
th
further development of school architecture from the second half of the 20 century is,
after all, one of the important public building tasks of our time. Ansicht von Südwesten • View from the southwest
