V on außen sieht man der neuen Ganztageseinrichtung des Klinikums Stuttgart die
enorme Kapazität gar nicht an: Die viergruppige Kita fügt sich minimalistisch in ein
Hanggrundstück im Stadtteil Bad Canstatt, signalisiert aber schon mit ihrer farbig poin-
tierten Fassade, dass es hier bunt und lebhaft, aber auch klar und strukturiert zugeht.
Von 5.45 Uhr bis 18 Uhr werden hier insgesamt 60 Kinder im Alter von null bis sechs Jah-
ren betreut. Dazu sind Funktionsräume wie Büros und Mitarbeiterbereiche, Garderoben,
Küche und WCs zum Hang hin orientiert, während die Gruppenräume der Kinder mit
Bezug zum etwa 500 Quadratmeter großen Garten angeordnet sind, der als gemeinsa-
mer Spielbereich genutzt wird. Vereint werden Funktions- und Aufenthaltsbereiche durch
den Spielflur, der sich durch das komplette Gebäude zieht und durch gezielte Verengun-
gen und Weitungen Raum für Begegnung, Bewegung und Perspektivwechsel – also Spiel-
raum im wahrsten Wortsinn – schafft. Innerhalb des Spielflurs werden dabei durch iden-
titätsstiftende Farbräume visuelle Anker gesetzt: Entweder als lilafarbene Einschnitte, die
statt normaler Türen vielmehr als geometrische Formen zu den Garderoben führen. Oder
als Polygone, die sich über Boden, Wand sowie Decke erstrecken und monochrom in
leuchtendes Gelb, Pink, Orange, Blau, Rot oder Grün getaucht sind – mal dominierend,
mal kontrastierend, mal korrespondierend – fröhliche Eyecatcher im klinischen Weiß.

F rom the outside, the new all-day nursery of the Stuttgart Hospital does not show its
enormous capacity: the day-care centre with four groups blends minimally into a
hillside site in Stuttgart’s Bad-Canstatt district, but its colourful façade already signals
that activities here are varied and lively, but also clear and structured. The facility looks
after 60 children aged zero to six years from 5.45 am to 6 pm. Functional rooms such
as offices and staff areas, changing rooms, kitchen and toilets are oriented towards the
slope, while the children’s group rooms are arranged towards the approximately 500-
square-metre garden, which is used as a common play area. Functional and communal
areas are united by the play corridor, which stretches through the entire building and
creates space for encounters, activity and a change of perspective – a play space in the
truest sense of the word – through deliberate narrowing and widening. Along the play
corridor, identity-generating coloured spaces are used to create visual anchors: either
as purple recesses that lead to the coat racks as geometric shapes rather than normal
doors. Or as monochrome polygons in yellow, pink, orange, blue, red or green that ex-
tend across the floor, walls and ceiling – sometimes dominating, sometimes contrasting,
sometimes corresponding: cheerful eye-catchers in the clinically white surroundings.
