C hristo luce del mondo – „Christus, das Licht der Welt“ – zeichnen die Schatten der
im Sichtbeton eingelassenen Lettern neben der Eingangsöffnung des organisch ge-
wundenen Kirchenneubaus. Und mehrfach bildet sich dieses Zitat als Leitmotiv von Mario
Cucinellas Architektur für das Bistum der kalabrischen Kleinstadt Mormanno ab. Mal of-
fensichtlich, mal subtil. Zum Vorplatz gerichtet formiert eine Melange aus Fassadenein-
schnitten und -rücksprüngen, deren Konturen bei Dämmerung durch Lichtlinien betont
werden, symbolträchtig das Kreuz Jesu. Außen abstrakt weiß, innen erdig rau, wohnt dem
Eintreten in den Zentralbau eine mystisch-sakrale Atmosphäre inne. Der Lichteinfall über
Oberlichter verstärkt diese kontemplative Stimmung und akzentuiert die vertikale Struk-
turierung der introvertierten Sichtbetonhülle. Konvex-konkav-fließend lässt die Gebäude-
form vier amöbenförmige Konchen, deren Hauptachsen nur geringfügig differieren, ent-
stehen, welche die Raumgliederung bestimmen. Eine Art moderner Kleeblattchor. Dabei
ließ sich Cucinella von Francesco Borrominis barocken Kirchen in Rom inspirieren; ins-
besondere von den Grundrissgeometrien von San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane und Sant’Ivo
alla Sapienza. Kunstvoll drapiert fängt von der Decke hängendes transluzentes Textilge-
webe das einfallende Sonnenlicht stimmungsvoll ein, untergliedert den 16 Meter hohen
Innenraum in der Vertikalen und verbessert – ganz nebenbei – die Raumakustik.

C hristo luce del mondo – Christ, light of the world – is what the shadows cast by the
letters embedded in the exposed concrete read next to the entrance of the organi-
cally sinuous new church. And this quotation is seen several times as the leitmotif of
Mario Cucinella’s architecture for the bishopric of the small Calabrian town of Mor-
manno. In places in an obvious way, in others subtly. Oriented towards the forecourt, a
mixture of façade incisions and -recesses – whose contours are emphasized by light lines
at dusk – symbolize the cross of Jesus. White outside, earthy rough inside, upon entering
the building, a mystical-sacral atmosphere is experienced. The light incidence through
skylights increases this contemplative mood and accents the vertical structuring of the
introverted envelope of exposed concrete. Convex-concave-flowing, the building form
produces four amoeba-like conches whose main axes only slightly differ and which de-
termine the spatial structure. A kind of a modern trefoil choir. Cucinella took his inspira-
tion from Francesco Borromini’s Baroque churches in Rome, however; in particular from
the layout geometries of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane and Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza. Arti-
stically draped, translucent textile fabric hung from the ceiling catches the incident sun-
light, vertically subdivides the 16-metres-high interior and improves room acoustics.
