U rsprünglich hatte das 1974 eröffnete Gebäude die neu gegründete Architektenverei-
nigung beherbergt. Der Entwurf stammte von Karel Prager (1923–2001), einem der
wichtigsten Vertreter brutalistischer Architektur in der Tschechoslowakei. Ganz vollendet
wurde der Bau am Ufer der Moldau nie. Doch die anspruchsvolle Konstruktion aus auf-
geständerten Decken und einem tiefen zentralen quadratischen Grundriss spiegelt immer
noch eindrucksvoll die architektonische Qualität seiner Entstehungszeit. Für die neue
Nutzung der Philosophischen Fakultät bedurfte es jetzt einer radikalen Veränderung.
Kuba & Pilař architekti bewahrten dabei zwar die äußere Form und die Proportionen des
ursprünglichen Kantinengebäudes, einen grundlegenden Eingriff stellte aber die Schaf-
fung eines großzügigen zentralen Hallenraums mit Oberlichtern zwischen den Dachträ-
gern dar. Die Aula ist heute das soziale Zentrum der Fakultät, gleichzeitig die räumliche
Verbindung aller drei Stockwerke. Um die Halle herum befinden sich Galerien mit Zu-
gang zu Seminarräumen, Lehrerzimmern und zwei Aufzügen mit Fluchttreppen, auf der
untersten Ebene der Halle Hörsäle, Aula, Fakultätsbibliothek und Dekanat. Bei den ver-
wendeten Materialien herrscht Sichtbeton kombiniert mit Decken aus feinem Metallge-
webe, schwarz eingefärbtem Estrich sowie weißen Einbauten und Möbeln vor. Dominiert
wird die Aula von flexiblen Sitzelementen in Orange – entworfen von Kuba & Pilař.

O riginally, the building, which was opened in 1974, housed the newly founded As-
sociation of Architects. It was designed by Karel Prager (1923-2001), one of the most
important representatives of brutalist architecture in Czechoslovakia. The building on
the banks of the river Vltava was never fully completed. But the sophisticated ceiling
construction and a deep, square ground plan still impressively reflects the architectural
quality of the time of its creation. A radical change was necessary to accommodate the
new needs of the Faculty of Humanities. Kuba & Pilař architekti preserved the external
shape and proportions of the original canteen building, but the main intervention was
the creation of a generous central hall space with skylights between the roof trusses.
Today, the auditorium is the social centre of the faculty and the spatial connection of all
three floors. Around the hall are galleries providing access to seminar rooms, staff
rooms and two lifts with escape staircases, and on the lowest level of the hall are lecture
theatres, the auditorium, the faculty’s library and the dean’s office. The materials used
are dominated by fair-faced concrete combined with ceilings made of fine metal mesh,
black-coloured screed and white built-in elements and furniture. The auditorium is do-
minated by a variable, orange seating furniture – designed by Kuba & Pilař.
