WEGROW SCHOOL
IN NEW YORK
Entwurf • Design BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group, US-New York
von • by Annette Weckesser
New Yorker Stadtteil Chelsea seit vergangenem Jahr erstmals eine eigene Schule
mente in Filz wieder. Entstanden ist eine intuitiv nutzbare Indoor-Landschaft. Niedrige,
A t its headquarters in the New York district of Chelsea, since last year the globally
operating WeWork workspace company offers its own school for children of
clients. BIG designed the WeGrow School as an interactive learning landscape for ages
three to nine. Common areas take up about half of the school. Among them are also
four ceiling-high glazed classrooms, workshops and a music- and art studio. Openness
and transparency are to encourage the children to discover something interesting, to
learn from each other and to gain experience. The Bjarke Ingels Group derives the om-
nipresent elliptical forms from the children’s natural urge to move and explore. In the
central play- and learning area, these are found as island-like carpets, upholstered
seating landscapes, pebble-shaped cushions, cosy wooden nests and acoustically ef-
fective felt ceiling elements. The result is an intuitively usable indoor landscape. Low
shelves curving through the room – adjusted in height to the children’s body heights –
structure the layout. They not only produce cosy niches but also make it easier for the
teachers to have full perspective. Sitting at tables, squatting, kneeling, sprawling –
everything is allowed and welcome. What counts are playful discovery and joyful lear-
ning. Design can help with this!
