I m Zentrum der Hauptstadt Südkoreas liegt der Bezirk Yongsan-gu. Er weist im Vergleich
zu den weiteren 24 Stadtbezirken Seouls die stärkste internationale Prägung auf. So ver-
wundert es auch kaum, dass sich hier einige Auslandsschulen niedergelassen haben.
Eine von ihnen ist die einzige deutschsprachige Schule Koreas, die Deutsche Schule Seoul
International (DSSI). Gegründet wurde sie 1976 und vereint seitdem Kindergarten, Grund -
schule und Sekundärstufen. Nach der Erweiterung des Kindergartens sowie der High -
school im Jahre 2012 und dem drei Jahre später folgenden Umbau der hauseigenen inter-
nationalen Bibliothek wurden nun auch die Unterrichtsräume für die erste und zweite
Grund schulklasse renoviert. Um dem Selbstverständnis der Privatschule – ein „Ort der
Be gegnung und des interkulturellen Dialogs“ zu sein – auch räumlich gerecht zu werden,
wich die ursprünglich orthogonale Trennung des zur Verfügung stehenden, unsymme -
trischen Raums einem flexiblen Gestaltungskonzept. Die Besonderheit des Entwurfs von
Daniel Valle Architects ist dabei die zwischen den beiden Un ter richts räumen angelegten
Be wegungsflächen. Die an einer Achse drehbaren Wandelemente der Klassen zim mer er -
mög lichen nicht nur eine Öffnung und Erweiterung der Unterrichtssituation zu den Frei -
flächen, sondern zugleich eine Zonierung dieser. So gelingt bei Bedarf die Auflösung einer
starren Unter richtssituation und das Gewähren von Privatheit in spielerischem Umfeld.

T he Yongsangu District is located in the centre of South Korea’s capital city.
Compared to the other 24 districts of Seoul, it is the one with the strongest inter-
national character. So it does not come as a surprise that several schools abroad have
settled in this area. One of them is the only German-speaking school in Korea, the
“Deutsche Schule Seoul International” (DSSI). It was founded in 1976 and has since
comprised a kindergarten, a primary school and secondary levels. Following the
extension of the kindergarten as well as the high school in 2012 and the conversion
of the school’s own international library three years later, the classrooms of the first
and second primary school class were recently renovated. To express the self-concep-
tion of the private school of being a “place of meetings and intercultural dialogue” in
architectural terms, the original orthogonal separation of the available unsymmetrical
room was replaced with a flexible design concept. The particularity of the design by
Daniel Valle Architects is the open movement area laid out between the two class-
rooms. The wall elements of the classrooms, which are rotatable around one axis,
make it possible to either open up and extend the teaching situation towards the
movement area or zone it. That way, strict teaching situations can be broken up and
privacy in a playful environment can be provided.
