D ie Rosemary Works School in London ist eine private Vor- und Grundschule, in der
Kinder im Alter von drei bis elf Jahren spielerisch beginnen dürfen zu lernen. Im Zuge
einer not wendigen Renovierung des rund 100 Jahre alten Gebäudes am Regentkanal
haben Aberrant Architecture das Innere in einen kunterbunten Ort des Entdeckens ver-
wandelt, wobei auch die gemeinsam erarbeiteten Ideen und Wünsche der Nutzer berück-
sichtigt wurden. Auf zwei Ebenen sind vielseitige Bereiche zum Lernen aber auch für den
Rückzug entstanden. Allen gemein ist der mutige Umgang mit kräftigen Farben, die voll-
flächigen Einsatz fanden und neben den historischen Stützen und Treppen auch beste-
hende Heiz körper, Leitungen und selbst die Toilettenräume einbeziehen. Im Kontrast zu
dieser Farb gewalt sind Einbauten und Möbel in hellem Holz gefertigt und wurden – ent -
sprechend der Altersgruppe – für jeden Raum individuell entwickelt. Den Mittelpunkt der
Schule bildet eine multifunktionale Halle im Erdgeschoss. Mithilfe von unterschiedlich
dicht gewebten Vorhängen, die an organisch geformten Schienen von der Decke hängen,
lassen sich immer neue Räume formen. So dient die Halle mittags als Speisesaal, wird
danach zum Toben genutzt und anschließend zum Vorlesen oder Ruhen in kleinere Seg -
mente geteilt. Höhlenartige Räume unter der Treppe, ausgestattet mit magnetischen Wän -
den und flexiblen Möbeln, schaffen weitere Zonen, die allein den Kleinen vorbehalten sind.

T he Rosemary Works School in London is a private pre- and primary school where
children aged between three to eleven years playfully start to learn. In the course
of a necessary renovation of the about one hundred year old building located at the
Regent channel, Aberrant Architecture converted the interiors into a colourful place of
discovering, whereby the jointly worked out ideas and wishes of the users were con-
sidered. Varied areas for learning as well as for retreat were created on two levels.
Their common characteristic is the courageous use of vibrant colours, which were
applied on full areas including historic columns and staircases as well as existing radi-
ators, pipes and even the toilet areas. Contrary to this powerful application of colours,
the built-in units and furniture are made of bright wood and were – corresponding to
the age group – individually developed for each room. The centre of the school is a
multifunctional hall on the ground floor. Ever new rooms can be created with the help
of curtains weaved with varying densities, which are suspended from the ceiling on
organically shaped rails. At lunchtime, the hall serves as a dining hall, is subsequently
used for rollicking about and finally divided into small segments for reading out or
resting. Cave-like rooms underneath the stairs, equipped with magnetic walls and flex-
ible furniture, create additional zones which are exclusively reserved for the children.
