OFFICE BUILDING
IN MUNICH
The collaboration of three global players for the House
of Communication on the iCampus in Munich’s Werks-
viertel demonstrates how work is done today: RKW con-
structed three buildings, with KAAN Architecten from
Rotterdam being responsible for their façades. And fi-
nally, HENN provided the interior architecture, designing
a considerable 40,000 square metres of office space.
T he iCampus is considered Munich’s hotspot for urban develop-
ment: the new quarter comprises an area of 110,000 square me-
tres with a total of ten buildings scheduled for completion by 2027. It
is the result of a collaboration between architectural firms, urban
planners, developers and participants in architectural competitions
and aims to combine working, living and housing in a forward-looking
concept. In order to connect the three five-storey atrium buildings,
which were completed last year and are named i5, i6 and i7, into a
coherent ensemble, HENN developed a central axis, which is accessed
via a six-metre-wide staircase in the entrance area of the first cube
and leads through all parts of the building at the height of the first
floor, not only symbolically. The main user of the House of Communi-
cation is the Serviceplan Group, which operates its agile network of
40 agencies with 1700 employees from here. In the atrium of the en-
trance cube, a 130-metre-long light installation of letters and symbols
inspired by classic neon signs floats four metres above the floor and
marks the visual and communicative centrepiece of the building. In
addition to coffee bars and digital installations, a large part of the
company owners’ art collection is on display here. The axis leads into
the central cube and to the canteen, which structures the entire
ground floor. The third cube is designed as a co-working space. Plan-
ned from inside to outside and from loud to quiet, the concept largely
avoids partition walls, as sound-absorbing panels and felt curtains
enable both communicative and focused work to be done in close
proximity. Some of the furniture and textiles were developed by HENN
Interior together with small companies from the region specifically for
the House of Communication. Clean lines and a monochrome colour
scheme in black, white and grey form the overarching design basis,
complemented by statement pieces in vibrant colours and with reflec-
tive surfaces that give the user their visual identity. The typeface de-
veloped especially for Serviceplan is used throughout the building, vi-
