LUI HOUSE
IN HERFORD
For more than a year, Frank Gehry’s Marta Herford mu-
seum has had a new neighbour: LUI House, an energy-ef-
ficient, three-storey office building that represents the
prototype of the new coworking-space provider. The
owners’ Archwerk architectural office is on the 2nd upper
floor and shows their professional expertise in and on
their own object – it couldn’t really work any better.
I mplementing modern working worlds is constantly being changed
by sustainable thinking. This is why the two architects Karsten and
Heike Monke, directors of the Herford Archwerk architectural office,
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan invested 4.3 million euros in a high-tech, energetically optimized new
office building. With a photovoltaic system on the roof, two deep-geo-
thermic heat pumps, activation of concrete elements, underfloor hea-
ting and a ventilation system with more than 90 percent heat reco-
very, the contemporary, almost self-sufficient brick building only has
to be supplied with drinking water. No less sustainable was the choice
of materials under the aspects of durability, life-cycle costs and cradle
to cradle. The selection consistently extends all the way to the sanitary
equipment with shower WCs to reduce the consumption of toilet
paper. The location of LUI House – whose name is a reference to its
location in Luisenstrasse – between the museum, the Steigenberger
Intercity Hotel and the Elsbacher textile manufactury in the “Marta di-
strict” seems to be lucrative and generates the interests and the re-
payment of the invested sum through leasing the high-quality equip-

Creative Labs to freelancers, small entrepreneurs and start-ups. Get-
ting to a public café by the shortest route and without having to leave
the building sounds as efficient as employee-friendly – in the ground-
floor lobby of LUI House, this is feasible due to a coffee bar, an out-
door restaurant and adjacent conference rooms. On the first upper
level are the coworking areas as well as ten individual office units, a
small lounge and a tea kitchen. For the architects and engineers of
Archwerk, there are various types of workstations and rooms availa-
ble on the second upper level, among them classic office units, smal-
ler work niches, a telephone box, lounges and meeting zones, a tea
kitchen and a small relaxation room for the in-between powernap. On
the top floor is the 200 square-metres Creative Lab with a digital pin-
board and adjacent 140 square metres of terrace with an outdoor kit-
