Das Königliche Museum der Schönen Künste, erbaut im 19. Jahrhundert von Jacob
Winders und Frans van Dyck, stellt heute eines der letzten Relikte des Neoklassizis-
mus im Stadtbild von Antwerpen dar. Im Zuge kürzlich abgeschlossener Sanierungs-
und Erweiterungsmaßnahmen ließen die Rotterdamer Kaan Architecten den histori-
stischen Außenbau daher gänzlich unangetastet, obgleich sie das innere Gesamtlay-
out auf die annähernd doppelte Fläche vergrößern und außerdem zeitgenössisch um-
interpretieren konnten. Dabei ist der bauzeitliche Gedanke eines sogenannten „Tages-
lichtmuseums“ mit Lichtdecken, -höfen und Promenaden berücksichtigt worden.

The Royal Museum of Fine Arts, conceived in the 19th century by Jacob Winders and
Frans van Dyck, today represents one of the last relicts of neoclassicism in the citys-
cape of Antwerp. In the course of the recently completed renovation- and expansion
works, the Rotterdam Kaan Architecten therefore left the historic exterior building
entirely untouched despite having been able to increase the internal overall layout
to almost double the area and re-interpret it in a modern way at the same time. In
