                                                                          For the room concept, it was important for me to create vertical and horizontal con-
                                                                          nections – with rooms as well as visual axes. A certain degree of separation had to
                                                                          be ensured, however, between the public and the groups of persons who had to be
                                                                          secured. As an element of the overall design, at the back of the building I added an
                                                                          enclosed, brass-coloured volume as block for several functions extending across
                                                                          both levels where, above all, the secondary rooms are located.

                                                                          Public downstairs – secured area upstairs

                                                                          On the upper floor is now an enclosed dining room for the requested secured area, a
                                                                          room in the room, as it were. The main access to the restaurant is for all visitors at the
                                                                          east side of the building but there also exist direct access routes. The entrance to the
                                                                          secured area is via a reception room inside the added block from which stairs lead to
                                                                          the upper level. There is also a secured outdoor space in the form of a small adjacent
                                                                          courtyard for stepping outside and enjoying fresh air. All the lounges for the public ex-
                                                                          tend across the whole ground floor and a gallery on the upper level. The separation of
                                                                          the two different zones is ensured on the upper level with an open space as well as a
            Lageplan • Site view                                          glass door and bulletproof textile curtains. As regards the materials used, their high
                                                                          quality was a priority for me. Travertine was therefore chosen as the floor covering on
                                                                          the upper level and marble elements taken from a deconstructed wall for the counter

                                                                          rooms furthermore add a high level of quality. On the ground floor, the quartzite floor
                                                                          was preserved. The secured and the public areas thus differ in the colouring of the ma-
                                                                          terials but definitely not in their quality. The stairs of black steel stand freely in the
                                                                          room like a sculpture and are another exciting element. Besides the lounge furniture I
                                                                          designed and which thanks to need-specific redesigns are able to produce acoustically
                                                                          calm rooms, various chair models of the Thonet brand were also chosen. For this as
                                                                          well, the high-quality and sustainable features were a priority for me. This makes it
                                                                          possible to flexibly divide rooms as needed and benefit from the acoustically effective
                                                                          material. The exposed beams of the building stock are equipped with rails to which
                                                                          acoustic curtains could be attached. The walls of the newly added brass-coloured block
                                                                          also contributed to improved acoustics since they are sound-absorbing due to the per-
                                                                          forated structure of their surface and the acoustic material installed behind them.

                                                                          Noble materials separate visually but not regarding quality


                                                                          As regards the façade, I attached importance to preserving the transom-mullion con-
                                                                          struction and to complement it with bulletproof glass. In principle, all the interven-
                                                                          tions were to be as subtle as possible. Folding sliding shutters of metal mesh which
                                                                          ensure the necessary sun- and sight protection, give the façade an additional new
                                                                          and fresh appearance. Inside, natural illumination takes place through the large
                                                                          windows at the façade, the additionally installed skylights as well as through the
                                                                          newly designed courtyard. Atmospheric basic lighting is produced by a suspended,
                                                                          flexible ceiling system which is also oriented on the basic grid of the building. Selec-
                                                                          tive illumination is produced by different means: Above the counters hang elegant
                                                                          pendant luminaires whereas in the open space pendant luminaires by Flos take up
                                                                          the lightness and spontaneity of the room and add their own accents. Since there
                                                                          are openings in the wall behind the perforated sheet plate in specific areas of the
                                                                          newly added block, here as well a connection between the two zones is made pos-
                                                                          sible and light effects, movements as well as visual relationship are created.

                                                                          Balancing act: dividing without separating

                                                                          I experienced the difficulty inherent in this design task as having to subdivide a buil-
                                                                          ding and its interior according to different functions which had to be separated wit-
                                                                          hout wanting to affect the intrinsic quality of the building. Due to its construction on
                                                                          pillars, the building profits from the possibility of a large-dimensioned openness
                                                                          which I implicitly wanted to preserve. My goal was to address the respective stipu-
                                                                          lated settings with all the means which were available to me and, at the same time,
                                                                          to design rooms which are well worth remembering. In all this, the focus on the ac-
                                                                          tual respective function should not be lost and the respect owed to the valuable buil-
                                                                          ding stock should clearly remain visible.
