D ie jungen Architekten Keming Wang und Xiaochao Song fühlen sich sehr der
Geschichte ihrer Heimatstadt Shanghai verbunden. Umso wichtiger war ihnen
beim Umbau ihrer Büroräume der Erhalt der historischen Strukturen in der dreige-
schossigen Villa aus den 1940er-Jahren mitten in der ehemaligen französischen Kon-
zession. Zwar enthoben sie das Erdgeschoss seiner Wohnnutzung, um dort acht Ar-
beitsplätze und die für ein Architekturbüro erforderlichen Nebenräume unterzubrin-
gen, sie versuchten sich aber weitestgehend mit der Raumaufteilung der 100 Qua-
dratmeter großen Wohnung zu arrangieren. Gelungen ist ihnen dies, indem sie raffi-
nierte Hybridlösungen erdachten: Der Hauptarbeitsraum dient gleichzeitig für Aus-
stellungen, der Besprechungsraum als Bibliothek; Modellwerkstatt, Material- und
Druckerraum können mit der Küche gekoppelt werden, weil Arbeits- und mobile
Platten die gleiche Höhe haben. Signifikantestes Gestaltungsmittel sind allerdings
die Bögen – eine Hommage an die ehemals französisch geprägte Architektur im Vier-
tel. Bogengänge und Torbögen aus Beton zonieren die Räume, während eine zarte
Stahlstruktur davor ein dynamisches Eigenleben entfaltet und unterschiedliche Ge-
wölbe nachbildet, die nicht nur den Bestand schützen, sondern gleichzeitig als lufti-
ges, raumhohes Ordnungssystem fungieren – wahrlich eine intelligente Geschichte!

T he young architects Keming Wang and Xiaochao Song feel strongly connected
to the history of their home town of Shanghai. When converting their office
premises, it was thus all the more important to conserve the historic structures in
the three-storey villa from the 1940s located right in the middle of the city’s former
French Concession. Although they freed the ground floor from its residential use to
make room for eight work stations and the side rooms which are necessary for an
architectural office, they tried their very best to come to terms with the 100 square-
metre floor plan. They succeeded with the help of sophisticated hybrid solutions:
The main work room can also be used as a venue for exhibitions, the meeting
room is a library at the same time; the model workshop, storage and printer room
was cleverly combined with the kitchen since the worktops and the mobile panels
all have the same height. The most significant design feature, however, are the ar-
ches – homage to the architecture in the formerly “French” district. Concrete arch-
ways divide the rooms and a delicate steel structure in front of them is a dynamic
feature and produces different vaults which not only protect the stock but are also
an airy, ceiling-high organizing system – truly a great idea!
