APARTMENT
IN BILBAO
Opposite the Guggenheim Museum, the magnificent En-
sanche district is located that originated starting in the
th
late 19 century. In a building from the late 1960s, this
is where Tenka Architektura have designed a refuge on
110 square metres. The flat represents the joie de vivre
of the young family in the form of a sky-blue, ubiquitous
zigzag wall. The bedroom holds surprises …

D espite the fact that it is located in the highly upscale Ensanche di-
strict, the building from the 1960s was of little architectural interest
in the opinion of Tenka Arkitektura. In addition, the top floor of the for-
mer office building came with a multitude of challenges: Reinforced-
concrete pillars and several ventilation shafts unfortunately manged to

“disturb” the original elongated, L-shaped layout. The result of the con-
version, however, is an extremely attractive flat. This is because the new
home reflects the lifestyle of the young couple with a little son – youth-
ful, casual, open, with an affinity to design. The architects strictly sepa-
3 rated the day- from the night zone. Both areas are linked by a curvili-
near wall painted sky blue that, upon the request of the family, gives
the apartment an explicitly cheerful atmosphere. The ceiling-high, inter-
estingly zigzag-structured MDF wall has been constructed by a local joi-

ner. This leitmotif of the design also characterizes the kitchen cabinets
and the bar counter. It integrates barely noticeable jib doors and is the

backbone and the structure of the residence. It conceals the bathroom,
the room for the washing machine as well as various ventilation shafts.
The zigzag relief produces a play of shadow and light. And its wood

communicates a feeling of warmth. The sky-blue wall “accompanies”
the family through their entire home. All the zones merge seamlessly.
This spatial effect is emphasized by a homogeneous, grey epoxy-resin
floor. In the rearmost part of the long layout, after a narrow curve and
dramatically staged, the parents’ bedroom expands and thus the hig-
hest and most open room. In a highly individual way, the “all-in-one-

room” combines the bedroom and the dressing room, bathroom and a
writing desk. With its shiny deep-blue stoneware wall tiles, the small,
