TREE HOUSE
IN SULZBERG
Wherever a tree house is being constructed, a childhood
dream is also coming true. In the case of a design by the
architect Georg Bechter, it turns into a highly precise
piece of Vorarlberg timber architecture. In Bregenzer-
wald, a private client has by himself implemented such a
masterwork and is now offering it for letting – for all
those who still want to make an old dream come true …
B ernhard Baldauf has built himself a nest. It is stuck high above
between the treetops of his forest at Oberköhler in Sulzberg (Vor-
arlberg) and has turned out to be a true masterpiece! In cooperation
with his two sons, the master carpenter has here, next to his family
farmhouse, implemented a design by the Vorarlberg architect and de-
signer Georg Bechter: an inhabitable raised hide with a roof terrace of
black-stained spruce wood that hides on thin steel stilts at approxi-
mately five metres above the ground and between the branches of the

four mezzanine floors. On the lower level, a cloak room, shower and
toilet are arranged around a central access core. The split level above
it contains a cosy sleeping niche. At the very top, a bright living room
with a kitchen, central dining area and a sofa bed opens with four
windows to the surrounding foliage. On the walls and the ceiling of
rough-sawn elm, due to the changing installation direction and grain
with fine pores arranged in row, a strikingly structured surface com-
position has been produced. The precisely assembled wood connec-
tions and details in the construction of the furniture and the stairs
look like decorative elements in it. The delicate tracery is illuminated
with the minimalist luminaires designed by Georg Bechter. How diffe-
rentiated the architectural planning and the artisanal implementation
are is shown on the high degree of detailing of the interior construc-
tion: flush-mounted doors ensure a clear overall impression, exactly
integrated wall cabinets and shelves provide ample storage – even in
the steps of the stairs, drawers are concealed! Here the forest, the tim-
ber in its numerous facets and possible degrees of processing are
everywhere – from the rough exterior shell of the tree house whose
formwork pattern reminds of the bark of old tree trunks to the sophi-
sticated interior construction. In this way, the surrounding nature is
joined with the interior and the former childhood dream of the client
about a rustic shelter in a tree with the technical precision of Vorarl-
