HOUSE
IN BINH THUAN
The conditions for a residential building in Ham Thuan
Bac, a city with 150,000 inhabitants in the province of
Binh Thuan in South Vietnam, pre-set much. But the
challenges were fortunate – for the architects of MIA
Design Studio and the new residents. And they resul-
ted in a well-thought-out design whose special interior
feature lies in the simplicity of the construction.
A tectural office, one may think. Yet for the designers of the MIA
Lageplan • Site view house for four people – not all that unusual a task for an archi-
Design Studio located in Ho Chi Minh City, there were some obstacles
to overcome all the same. On the one hand, only a restricted budget
was available for the basic demands and needs regarding a new li-
ving space for a family of four. On the other hand – and that was al-
most more of a challenge – the project was designed and built during
the Covid pandemic. For the planners, this meant designing a kind
of architecture that could be handled by the local service providers
and with the use of regional construction materials. In addition to
functional aspects such as the wish for natural light and natural ven-

ted) sheet metal, a construction material typical of the region, a steel-
frame construction was developed by the MIA Design Studio where
everything can be suspended: walls, sliding doors or curtains to se-
parate the functions of a room as well as furniture directly attached
to the frames. These structures not only made low construction costs
possible since the material can be found within a perimeter of one
kilometre but also allow room arrangements that can easily be
changed by the residents – always adapted to the current life circum-
stances. The flexible, elongated layout is spanned by a shed roof.
Längsschnitt • Longitudinal section Right behind the entrance is the open living-, dining- and kitchen
area. Shelves are here attached to steel girders; base cabinets on
cast0rs can easily be pulled out and distributed in the room. The re-
sult is a room for the whole family where one can cook, eat, play and
live. Between this section and the private bedrooms in the back part
of the house of 125 square metres are the washrooms and a tower-
shaped toilet which projects out of the façade surface. A gallery can
be accessed by a ladder and above all provides additional storage.
Steel and glass dominate the exterior as well as the interior whereas
