HOUSE BOERDERETTE
IN VENRAY
After two decades of influx into large cities, recently the
opposite trend towards suburbanization has started.
Near Venray, the architect Björn Martenson from AMUNT
designed with Luc Merx a new country home in timber-
frame construction. A section of a field was turned into a
place of contrasts between technology and idyll and com-

T he basis for the repurposing of a field oversaturated with pestici-
des was an ecological revitalization of the site. The garden- and
residence concept was thereby seen as a unit striving for an individual
solution with high architectural quality located somewhere between
romanticized country living, engineered agriculture, traditional resi-

rials, however, the new building invokes sober, agricultural buildings
such as silos and barns and thus visually deconstructs the idyllic cli-

slightly elevated on a concrete base plate. With a building depth of

rously opens to the scenery so that living with the seasons is part of

the other and accessed from room to room in the classic style of an
enfilade. The sequence of the use areas looks particularly effective

places open all to the way to below the roof ridge, brightly designed
and thus spacious; in other areas low and pleasantly secluded due to
the partially built-in upper level for the parental refuge and the slee-

ned to be intimate thanks to sparingly installed roof windows with a
view into the sky. In accordance with the wish of the client family, the
