WOOD RIBBON
APARTMENT IN PARIS
„The whole concept was to create some Preserving the old, integrating the new – adapting a ty-
pical Parisian flat in an old building to the needs of a
contemporary architecture, a light young family of three without negating the charm of
element that would allow to preserve all the architecture was a challenge for Toledano + Archi-
tects. They accomplished this with lightweight, undu-
the existing historical elements [...] lating wooden wall structures that reorganise the floor
while unveiling new uses.“ plan and give the living space a flowing organic shape.
Gabrielle Toledano
T dominates the entire city centre of Paris to this day. On behalf of
he architecture of Georges-Eugènes Haussmann (1809-1891) still
Emperor Napoleon III, the city planner was to carry out a fundamental
urban renewal programme in the French capital and unify the appea-
rance of central boulevards. Starting in the middle of the 19th century,
Haussmann gave the central Paris its famous and, for the time, mo-
dern appearance. The client commissioned Toledano + Architects, an
architecture firm with offices in Paris and Tel Aviv, with the contempo-
rary redesign of an apartment in a typical Haussmann residence for
his family of three. With simple but unconventional interventions, a
new organic floor plan has been created here that does not deny the
existing historical elements of the apartment, but gives it a new iden-
tity. Two set-in wood ribbons undulate through the apartment and de-
fine a private and a common area: the living room and the kitchen and
dining room. To the right of the entrance is the master bedroom and
on the opposite side the child’s room with a separate bathroom. This
area accommodates the family’s private retreats and is connected to
the living space adjoining it by a narrow corridor section. There, the
curved surfaces open up in a grand gesture towards the salon and the
kitchen, which are both arranged along the façade side. In order not
to obscure the view of the historical stucco decoration and the original
room layout, the project team had the wooden ribbon end shortly un-
derneath the ceiling. This also accommodates wall niches at various
points and even the fully equipped kitchen in the dining room. Clad
in brass and travertine, the functional recesses create a bold contrast
to the bright wood. The main bathroom, on the other hand, is fitted
with luxurious grey onyx tiles – an exciting counterpoint to the other-
wise rather plain material scheme, dominated by the young and rela-
xed feeling conveyed by the bright wood. White and orange resin sur-
faces lend a playful touch to the children’s room, and in the dressing
rooms behind the newly recessed wooden walls, ceiling panels made
