HOLIDAY HOME
IN MENZENSCHWAND
The portfolio of AMUNT Nagel Theissen from Stuttgart
comprises very independent architectural and interior
design. Their skills lie in developing the particular – in
finding sensitive responses to needs far from template
solutions and trends. Their style is clearly recognisa-
ble! And yet each of her concepts is as individual and
detailed as the wishes of the occupants and clients.
H olidays in one’s home country – what was considered stuffy a
few years ago is quite popular today, because climate-friendly
behaviour is the order of the day! Whether by train to the rugged
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan North Sea coast or to the Alps – the clients of the Stuttgart-based ar-
chitecture office only take holidays in Germany. So why not combine
the desire for owning a property with a temporary dream home? The
aims were clear: a sustainable holiday home to be shared with others
and high-quality architecture. The clients found what they were loo-
king for in the small holiday resort of Menzenschwand in the southern
Black Forest. A building site on a slope, surrounded by trees and with
a view of the tranquil valley. A challenge – also for Sonja Nagel and
Jan Theissen. Roof pitch, ridge direction, eaves height and roof over-
hangs are stipulated by the land-use plan. Instead of slipping into or-
dinariness, the architects created an unusual building from the strict
regulations! To minimise interventions on the site, the house is raised
on pillars. A concrete slab supports the wooden construction and pro-
Grundriss Obergeschoss • Upper floor plan tects it from wind and weather. Two buildings, rotated by 45 degrees,
follow the slope down to the valley. The architecture makes the diffe-
rence in elevation perceptible inside, as if on a hike, and affords ever
new views of the picturesque landscape. The holiday home is acces-
sed at ground level – a triangular forecourt provides space for sledges,
skis and hiking boots. Inside, holidaymakers find a sequence of inter-
locking rooms. The kitchen, living room, dining room and fireplace
area are connected by a few steps that follow the topography of the
terrain. A green strip along the edges of the rooms merges the open-
ness to create a sense of unity. The shade of green, inspired by loden
fabrics, is complemented by local materials such as Douglas fir. Yel-
low highlights echo the spring-like blossom colour of the maple tree
that stands in front of the house. The petrol-coloured staircase leads
via the gallery to the intimate retreats upstairs. The result is a Black
Forest house, interpreted in a contemporary way, for residents and
guests, for friends and strangers – simply for everyone!
