L ong and narrow, three times as long as it is wide. Such extreme
floor plans excite architects. Especially when an entrance, kitchen,
dining area, bathroom, living and sleeping area have to be accommo-
dated on just 38 square metres. With the Equador 201 holiday flat in
Cascais, Duarte Caldas.Architecture Design demonstrates how this can
3 1 be done. This “temporary flat” is surprisingly airy despite its room
schedule. To achieve this, the team of office founder Duarte Caldas
had all the non-load-bearing elements of the existing building remo-

open-plan layout with an ingenious zoning. The “corridor” – the leit-
motif of the project – is much more than a circulation area: it is an ac-
cess zone, visual axis and living space all at once. This proverbial gol-

along it. All the permanent fixtures – kitchen unit, living room shelf,
bedroom sideboard – but also the small dining area, are 60 centime-

the flat; a mirror doubles it. Living and sleeping areas can be visually
separated or integrated by means of floor-to-ceiling, translucent, rota-
table panels. Light can thus penetrate into the farthest corners of the
flat. A homogeneous floor screed emphasises the spatial continuum.
The architects merely had the rough plaster of the walls painted grey.
The reinforced concrete beams were also left visible. The colour white
and new smooth, varnished surfaces are used to add a dominant con-
trast to this industrial charm. The bathroom is painted light blue. The
archaic-looking washbasin and shower are made of natural stone.
This holiday flat, which is intended to offer guests the comfort and de-
sign of a veritable residence, is radiantly bright. Equador 804, another
flat designed by the architects for Olala Homes in Cascais, has a com-
