GREEN BOX APARTMENT
IN BERLIN
The location between the Landwehr Canal and Trepto-
wer Park in Berlin’s Alt-Treptow district is captivating, the
view is magnificent, the elongated floor plan on top of a
new six-storey building proved to be perfect for the cus-
tomised extension. Ester Bruzkus once again demonstra-
tes how well she can mould the individual wishes of her
clients into unusual forms: a green box for two vegans.
Grundriss • Floor plan
I n 2019, Moritz Ulrich and Niklas Noack, the co-founders of Peace
Ester Bruzkus mit Eigentümern Moritz Ulrich und Niklas Noack • Ester Bruzkus and her clients Moritz Ulrich and Niklas Noack Yoga in Berlin, purchased an attic flat still under construction.
Structurally complete with two floor-to-ceiling glass façades and two
solid concrete walls, concrete floor and ceiling, the flat, in its neutral
state, was reminiscent of a small Miesian Farnsworth House. Ester
Bruzkus and her office partner Peter Greenberg responded to the
vegan couple’s desire for a cool but cosy residence by designing a de-
tached, complex, custom-made box, which they positioned in the cen-
tre of the elongated space. This made it possible to make perfect use
of the already existing materials and dimensions without interrupting
the flow of movement and the relationship to the roof terrace exten-
ding along the glass façades. All kitchen functions and even a fold-out
sauna are integrated into the box, while the bathroom, guest toilet
and storage spaces are located in the area between the box and the
existing rear wall. The bedroom and the living room are arranged
around the inserted box, each with unobstructed views of the city.
This simple planning strategy is enriched by a range of lush colours
that contrast with the raw concrete walls and ceilings. In addition to
the box painted deep green, a diverse material selection including
quartzite, terrazzo, limestone and brass, combined with richly colou-
red surfaces and textiles, such as the conspicuous bed head in the be-
droom or the three-dimensional rug in the living room, create a sur-
prising cosiness without ever seeming staid or plush. The kitchen is-
land captivates with a sophisticated interplay of colours and materials
such as green-violet quartzite, lacquered wood and black-tinted glass,
effectively staged by playful and sculptural lighting. The bathroom
and guest toilet also boast exciting colour contrasts and carefully craf-
ted details: green marble, black steel and pink Corian perfectly blend
in with the pale limestone of the shower and bathtub. To round of the
design, the simple geometry of the circle appears – with meticulous
details – as a unifying element in the design of furniture handles, an
oversized round mirror and in a circular skylight above the shower.
