Das Versteck des Bond-Bösewichts Blofeld aus „You Only
Live Twice“ tief im ausgehöhlten Kern eines erloschenen
japanischen Vulkans war augenblicklich eine Ikone und
wurde später immer wieder in Filmen zitiert. Der Set-Ent-
wurf stammte von Ken Adam. Er imaginierte eine 150
Meter hohe Halle mit schwebenden Treppen, Hubschrau-
berlandeplätzen und einem hydraulisch versenkbaren
Dach. So schön die Vorstellung auch ist, dass Adam einen
Vulkan aushöhlen ließ, um dieses atemberaubende Set zu
errichten, so entstand es Wirklichkeit doch in den Pine-
wood Studios bei London – für die damals unglaubliche
Summe von einer Million US-Dollar. Die Außenaufnah-
men zeigen den Shinmoedake auf der Insel Kyushu.

The hiding place of James Bond's opponent Blofeld in You
Only Live Twice deep inside the hollowed-out core of an
extinct volcano in Japan was an instant icon and was sub-
sequently quoted in movies over and over again. The film
set design was devised by Ken Adam. He imagined a 150-
metre high hall with suspended stairs, helicopter landing
pads and a hydraulically retractable roof. As beautiful as
it is to imagine that Adam had a volcano hollowed out to
build this breath-taking set, it was actually created at Pi-
newood Studios near London – for the then incredible
amount of one million US dollars. The outdoor shots
show the volcano Shinmoedake on the island of Kyushu.

Mit der Anmutung einer fliegenden Untertasse steht das
von John Lautner 1960 entworfene Chemosphere-Haus
im Torreyson Drive in Los Angeles. Bereits für einige
Filme diente es als Kulisse, wurde aber nie so luxuriös in-
szeniert wie in „Der Tod kommt zweimal“, in dem es den
Wohnsitz von Sam Bouchard verkörpert. Getragen wird
dieses Haus in den Hollywood Hills von einem zwei
Meter breiten Betonmast und Stahlstreben, die an die
Speichen eines Fahrrads erinnern. Die Innenräume besit-
zen den Charme einer 1980er-Jahre Junggesellen-Woh-
nung. Die bescheidene, offen geschnittene Grundfläche
in der unwirtlichen Umgebung – aber vor allem die Aus-
sicht – machen dieses Haus zu etwas Besonderem.

The Chemosphere House, which was designed by John
Lautner in 1960 and resembles a flying saucer, is located
on Torreyson Drive in Los Angeles. It has already served
as a backdrop for several films, but has never been staged
as luxuriously as in Body Double, in which it represents
the residence of Sam Bouchard. This house in the Holly-
wood Hills is supported by a buried concrete pedestal as
well s a two-metre-wide concrete post and steel struts that
resemble the spokes of a bicycle. The interiors have the
charm of a 1980s bachelor apartment. The modest, open-
plan layout in the inhospitable surroundings – but above
all the view – makes this house something special.
