200 Fuß unter dem Grand Central Terminal von Metro-
polis liegt das Versteck von Bösewicht Lex Luthor. Es
stellt eine der kreativsten Kulissen des gesamten Super-
man-Films dar. Ausgestattet ist die verlassene, unterirdi-
sche Halle des Grand Central Terminal mit allem was
das Schurkenherz begehrt. Nebst Palmen, reichlich ver-
zierten Stuben mit orientalischen Teppichen, zahlrei-
chen Antiquitäten und Marmoroberflächen dient ein
ehemaliger, mit Wasser gefluteter Spureingang als opu-
lentes Schwimmbad. Einige der Szenen wurden tatsäch-
lich im Grand Central Terminal gedreht, während das
palastartige Versteck Luthors in den Pinewood Studios
außerhalb Londons aufgebaut war.

200 feet below the Metropolis Grand Central Terminal
lies the hideout of evildoer Lex Luthor. It is one of the
most creative sets in the entire Superman film. The
abandoned underground hall of Grand Central Termi-
nal is equipped with everything an antihero's heart
could desire. In addition to palm trees, richly decorated
rooms with oriental rugs, numerous antiques and mar-
ble surfaces, a former track entrance flooded with
water serves as an opulent swimming pool. Some of
the scenes were actually shot at Grand Central Termi-
nal, while Luther's palatial hideaway was set up at the
Pinewood Studios outside London.

Seitlich am Hang des Mount Rushmore, wo auch der Hö-
hepunkt von „Der Unsichtbare Dritte“ stattfindet, hatte
sich der Filmschurke Phillip Vandamm seinen Wohnsitz
eingerichtet. Inspiration für dieses Versteck bot Frank
Lloyd Wrights Fallingwater in Pennsylvania. Nachdem je-
doch Wrights Preisvorstellungen als zu hoch eingestuft
wurden und das US-Innenministerium den Bau eines Ge-
bäudes nahe des Mount Rushmore verboten hatte, muss-
ten Alfred Hitchcock und Produktionsdesigner Robert
Boyle kreativ werden. Dank eines Spezialeffektes, der
echte Kulissen mit detaillierten Gemälden verband, ent-
stand das Äußere des Hauses. Die Innenräume wurden
auf dem MGM-Gelände in Culver City realisiert.

At the side of a slope of Mount Rushmore, where the cli-
max of the film North by Northwest takes place, Phillip
Vandamm had built his residence. Inspiration for this hi-
deaway came from Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater in
Pennsylvania. However, after Wright's price expectations
were deemed too high and the US Department of the In-
terior banned the construction of a building near Mount
Rushmore, Alfred Hitchcock and production designer Ro-
bert Boyle had to use their imagination. The exterior of
the building was created thanks to a special effect that
combined real backdrops with detailed paintings. The in-
teriors were built on the MGM grounds in Culver City.
