This means that it does not require a special tractor and can be moved with driving

... and could alleviate the housing shortage in our cities.

The mobile house is designed as a timber frame construction, which is mounted on a
steel trailer with four wheels. The envelope, coated with sheet metal and finished with
wood fibre insulation, guarantees good thermal properties. In addition, the two large
French windows ensure a considerable natural input of light and heat. This has a posi-
tive effect on energy self-sufficiency, especially in the cold season. In the summer, the
house is well ventilated due to the two doors. The aVoid is also equipped with photo-
voltaic panels including rechargeable batteries, a controlled mechanical ventilation
system and infrared panel heating. The purchase of all electrical equipment was car-
ried out with the lowest possible energy consumption in mind. For Di Chiara, his aVoid
follows in the tradition of American Tiny Houses and could be an answer to the current
housing shortage in major European cities. This is one of the reasons why he designed
the house with closed longitudinal sides. Industrially produced, it can be lined up like
a real terraced house in any number and could thus fulfil an urban planning function.
What the architect has in mind is a whole estate of houses on wheels that can be easily
moved from one place to another within an existing urban fabric. Unused inner-city
areas could be activated quickly and easily. Due to his direct living experience, Di
Chiara is thinking about the next generation of aVoids. He could also imagine transfer-
ring the spatial concept to real estate. He will present the current model as part of the
special exhibition „Tiny Spaces“ at the Interzum trade fair in Cologne from 21 to 24 May. Grundriss und Schnitt • Floor plan and section
