ARCHIVE ARKDES
IN STOCKHOLM
Since its foundation in 1962, the Swedish centre for archi-
tecture and design ArkDes has built up one of the world’s
largest archives for modern architecture and design: over
four million objects in the former barracks on Skeppshol-
men. However, in order to see the museum not only as
an archive but also as an open platform, Arrhov Frick has
now redesigned the state institution.
T he Stockholm museum had been closed to the public for almost a
year for a major renovation. In addition to the rooms for the new per-
manent exhibition and the areas for temporary exhibitions, the building’s
historic entrance was also renovated in the course of the interventions.
For the complete redesign, architects Johan Arrhov and Henrik Frick deci-
ded to take a radical circular approach and create an innovative pre-
sentation system from what was already existing right in the premises:
around 1,000 metal-, wood- and glass parts from previous exhibitions
have been dismantled, catalogued and then reassembled into over 100
new objects – from tables, chairs, luminaires and display walls to lar-
ger structures in which different climatic and lighting conditions are now
Grundriss Erdgeschoss • Ground floor plan guaranteed. These separate rooms can not only accommodate sensitive
exhibits, but can also be flexibly connected thanks to the ingenious idea
of installing silvery shimmering textile curtains. This means that the floor
plan remains highly dynamic and is thus comparable to a blank canvas
that can be reused for every imaginable exhibition, event or concert. The
national museum is not only intended to present 150 years of Swedish
architectural history, but also to become a universal platform, a creative
workshop as well as a think tank, bringing to life for society the transfor-
mative potential of architecture and design. Kieran Long, former director
of ArkDes, praises this design concept: “The work of the two architects
is characterized by a clear artistic process that succeeds in encompas-
sing everything that is important for an outstanding museum: how to
Längsschnitt • Longitudinal section design open and free public spaces in which diverse movements and
lives become possible. Their proposal is reminiscent of the famous Palais
de Tokyo in Paris, where a pre-existing space is used to generate new
possibilities for the presentation of architecture and design.” However,
the project also shows that the traditional scenographic aesthetics are
currently undergoing a significant change: the aim is no longer merely
about realizing dazzling high-gloss projects, but also about raising aware-
ness of the ecological responsibility that designers must take on in order
Querschnitt • Transversal section to develop sustainable projects.
