MARKTKAUF
IN GELSENKIRCHEN

T he task of the retail specialist Valentina Kinzel and her team was to produce better
orientation for the customers on a sales area of 9,200 square metres and, in the
process, also bring brightness and transparency into the existing customer hall. To
achieve this, the most important measures were to break up the complex appearance of
the hall and to better separate the individual departments. White tiles now ensure
brightness and indicate freshness and cleanliness; striking colours and consistent black
lettering create visual calm and provide orientation. By emphasizing each group of pro-
ducts with so-called highlight shelves, a clear structure could be achieved. Each highlight
takes up the range of the department as to colour and atmosphere and elegantly desi-
gned graphics on the walls and the shelves reflect the respective theme. The customers
directly associate the graphics and the colours with the departments, find their way bet-
ter through the market and keep encountering optical attractions – framed by the consi-
stent design which allows the individual areas of the market stands take their effect. Al-
ready from a distance, for instance, the fruit- and vegetable department reminds of a
greenhouse where one is able to “harvest” one’s fresh fruits and vegetables oneself. The
final result is a well-ordered, appetizing supermarket with a boutique appearance.
