of an “island above the city” based on various models such as the Torre Velasca or the
Unité d’Habitation. An elongated building oriented along the main road and elevated
with a massive concrete base far above street level and thus producing an enormous
long-distance effect as a widely visible, monumental building volume and thus a suitable
entrance to the Stuttgart city centre. Due to the narrow and unobtrusive design of the
base, the building at the same time takes on a rather subordinate role in the streetscape.
We were to integrate the findings from the previous steps in an interior design for the
building shape to develop a model image. Whereas, in the first step of the design, we
had focussed on windows as the symbols of our isolation, now the question arose what
home should be able to achieve in order to decrease this feeling of isolation? Does a flat
have to be more than four walls, a window and a bed? Here our concept of living envi-
sages two different types of flats, each extending over two floors and differing in size.
There is thus a flat for two persons and, on the other hand, a larger type offering up to
four people the option of living together like a family. “Rooms for communication” situa-
ted between the flats and the central access hallway provide areas for common use. A
further lounge thus becomes possible. This common room, which is designed to be two
storeys high towards the façade, has a specific spatial quality and openness. It can also
be opened to the private living rooms inside the flats to extend them.
