D as Stadtviertel Nervion im südspanischen Sevilla galt bis ins späte 19. Jahr hun dert
hin ein als Kornkammer der Stadt. Damals standen hier nur wenige Gebäude – da -
runter jedoch eine mächtige Backsteinhalle, in der die Bauern ihre Dampf trak to ren unter-
stellten. Im frühen 20. Jahr hun dert entwickelte sich Nervion dann zum In dus trie viertel und
in die ehemalige Trak to renhalle zog eine Far ben fabrik ein. An ihrer isolierten Lage inner-
halb des Vier tels än der te sich jedoch nichts. Erst als in den 1950er-Jahren immer mehr
Wohn bau ten – zumeist einfache, zweigeschossige Arbeiter häu ser – entstanden, rückte die
Be bau ung an die Halle heran. Als dann noch ein Wohn geschoss über ei nem Teil der Halle
errichtet wurde, verschwand sie endgültig hinter einer ge schlos senen Stra ßen front. Und
getreu dem Motto „Aus den Augen, aus dem Sinn!“ verlor sich das Wis sen um ihre Exis -
tenz. Als die Far ben fabrik auszog und die Architekten Juan Serrano und Paloma Ba quero
damit begannen, die Einbauten der letz ten Jahr zehnte zu entfernen, staunten sie nicht
schlecht, als sie mit den abgehängten Decken, Trennwänden und zahllosen Putz schich ten
auch den Schleier der Ge schich te entfernten. Selbst in der Fassade machten sie die ehe-
malige Traktoren zu fahrt wieder sichtbar. Heute befindet sich hier der Zugang zu einer riesi-
gen Comic-Buch hand lung. Einfache Regale und Warenträger aus Grobspan plat ten pas sen
sich dem rohen Charme an und verdecken die historische Architektur nicht länger.

U ntil the late 19th century, the district of Nervion in Seville in the south of Spain
was considered to be the city’s granary. At the time, there were only a few buil-
dings here – among them, however, a mighty brick hall where the farmers kept their
steam tractors. In the early 20th century, Nervion then developed into an industrial
district and a paint factory moved into the former tractor hall. Yet this did not change
its isolated location within the district. Only when, in the 1950s, more and more resi-
dential buildings were constructed – mostly simple, two-storey workmen’s houses –
did the development move close to the hall. When a residential floor was built above
part of the hall, it once and for all disappeared behind a closed street frontage. And
true to the motto “Out of sight, out of mind”, the knowledge about its existence dis-
appeared. When the paint factory moved out and architects Juan Serrano and Paloma
Baquero started removing the installations from the last decades, they were quite
amazed when, together with the suspended ceilings, partition walls and countless
layers of plaster – they also lifted the veil of history. Even in the façade, the former
tractor entrance became visible again. Today, this is where the access to a huge
comic-book store is found. Simple shelves and product carriers of sterling boards
match the rough charm and no longer conceal the historic architecture.
