DISTRICT COURT
IN TÜBINGEN
A part of the Tübingen District Court is located not far
from the Neckar River and the old town. The probate, gu-
ardianship and insolvency court was accommodated in a
building of the former Thiepval Barracks. For the local
firm Dannien Roller, this marked the beginning of a ba-
lancing act between monument restoration, military his-
tory and the requirements of a place of jurisdiction.
I n the shadow of the main buildings of the Thiepval Barracks, desi-
gned by Alexander von Tritschler (1828-1907) as a homage to the pa-
laces of the Italian early Renaissance, the former depot building appe-
ars almost inconspicuous. Built in 1907, some 30 years after the con-
struction of the main complex at the military compound, as a simple
Lageplan • Site view reinforced concrete building with a light-coloured plastered façade,
the building still has a subtle and discreet appearance next to its do-
minant neighbour. Various changes of use – including those as a vehi-
cle depot and laundry – took their toll on the building fabric and ne-
cessitated extensive renovation and reconstruction measures to pre-
serve the listed architecture. The foundation was replaced, the foun-
dation slab was lowered, the floor slab between the ground and first
floor was replaced, and support measures were necessary, not to men-
tion fire protection! Dannien Roller Architekten approached the com-
plex task unfazed and demonstrated – in addition to the necessary and
massive interventions in the building fabric – a sensitive approach in
the design of the premises. They transformed the former military buil-
ding, which symbolises conflict, power and the readiness to fight, into
a place of justice and independent administration of justice. For this
purpose, they immersed the ground floor in subtle shades and light
materials that create clarity and transparency through their arrange-
ment. The district court is accessed via two historical archways. Re-
specting the cubature of the building, the vestibule is recessed into the
building. Light wood fixtures characterise the spacious foyer and the
courtrooms, which in combination with the plastered walls and polis-
hed floors result in a restrained but venerable design. The architects
decided to open the arches of the former garage gates at the back of
the building to provide the courtrooms and meeting rooms with day-
light. Translucent partitions ensure that light reaches even the depths
of the floor plan. Dannien Roller Architekten have succeeded in crea-
ting a legitimate design far removed from dusty associations with aut-
