CLINICUM ALPINUM
IN GAFLEI
People suffering from depression and exhaustion need
it very much: a place where they can find rest. This is
exactly what a private clinic in the Liechtenstein Alps
has to offer. In a secluded location at an altitude of
over 1,500 metres, a refuge has been created which,
thanks to its location and sensitively designed archi-
tecture, can very well be healing for these patients.
G aflei is a special place, a place of longing for hikers and, already
in the 19th century, was a spa, the oldest in the Principality of
Liechtenstein. In this idyllic spot, the new building of the private Cli-
nicum Alpinum has been constructed by the Munich J2M architects
who won the invited competition with their design. The existing to-

Albspitz rocks and the panoramic view of the Rhine Valley is the set-
ting for the multistorey building whose volume merges into the sur-
rounding landscape. To achieve this effect, the relatively large con-
struction of close to 8,000 square metres was divided into two parts
and superimposed as recognizable layers. The lower, stone part is the
basis where, in addition to the rooms for the infrastructure, the spa-
and therapy areas are. Spacious terraces and parapets which ab-
stractly emulate the topography give this part of the building its auto-
nomous appearance. On this “landscape base” rests the openly desi-
gned entrance level with the lobby, restaurant and a multifunctional
hall which support the two floors situated above with the 50 guest
rooms, administration offices and staff apartments. These premises
are arranged around an inside patio which vertically penetrates the
compact, cubic building volume with a façade of wooden slats. Wood
and stone are the dominant materials not only on the outside – in the

mood. Above all in the patient rooms, attention was furthermore at-
tached to an intimate and comfortable atmosphere which is impor-
tant for the healing process. Clay plaster, textiles on the floors and at
the walls as well as select individual pieces of furniture complement
the well-organized private rooms. A loggia open to the mountain
landscape is just as much part of the equipment of the guest rooms
as is the open bathroom where the tub is positioned right in front of
a panorama window. The sensitive dealing of the designers with ma-
terials, forms and furniture offers the patients an environment that re-
