3 Mit 15.000 Erdbeben jährlich schwankt in Neuseeland regelmäßig der Untergrund.
Im Februar 2011 war eines der Beben so stark, dass weite Teile der Stadt Christ -
church zerstört wurden. Der Wiederaufbau ist wegen des sandigen Untergrundes bis
heute schwierig. Selbst denkmalgeschützte Gebäude, wie die ChristChurch Cathedral im
Zen trum, sind deshalb unwiederbringlich verloren. Stadt planer wie Architekten ar bei ten
seither an der Herausforderung, Christchurch ein neues, identitätsstiftendes Ge sicht zu
geben. Die Planer von Archi tec tus haben sich mit dem neuen Busbahnhof an die ser Mis -
sion beteiligt. Am Kopfende eines Häuser blocks enstand innerhalb des Alt stadtrings die
neue Dreh scheibe für den Bus ver kehr. Um auf begrenztem Raum bis zu 1.000 Bus be -
wegungen am Tag möglich zu machen, entschieden sich die Planer für eine Kreisver -
kehrzufahrt. Der L-förmige Bahnhofsbau schließt die Baulücke an zwei Straßen ab und
bietet rückseitig 16 Bussen wettergeschützte Park buch ten mit direktem Zugang zur War -
tehalle. Straßenseitig bestimmen das polygonale Haupt dach sowie meh rere in die Fassa -
de integrierte Shopzellen den Neubau und weisen diesen als öffentlichen Raum mit
hohem Wieder erkennungswert aus. Die Materialität des Baukörpers ist im Außen- wie
Innen raum gleich und orientiert sich mit Metall, Holz, Beton und ziegelroten Ober flä -
chen an der Umgebungs bebauung. Alle eingestellten Wartemöbel sind Teil einer Stadt -

3 In February 2011, one of the earthquakes was so strong that major parts of the city

of Christchurch were destroyed. Due to the sandy ground, the reconstruction remains
difficult to this day. Even listed buildings such as Christchurch Cathedral in the centre
are therefore irretrievably lost. Urban planners as well as architects have thus ever since
been working to meet the challenge of giving Christchurch a new, identity-defining look.
With the new bus station, the planners from Architectus participated in this mission. At
the head end of a block of houses and inside the inner city, a new hub for bus transport
was designed. To make up to 1,000 bus departures and arrivals possible on such a
restricted area, the planners decided in favour of an access in the form of a roundabout.
The L-shaped station building closes the empty site at two streets and, at the back, has
weather-protected parking bays for 16 busses with direct access to the waiting hall. On
the sides fronting the street, the polygonal main roof as well as several shop “pods”
integrated into the façade characterize the new building and turn it into a public space
with high recognition value. The materials of the building are the same inside and out-
side and, with metal, wood, concrete and brick-red surfaces, match the surrounding
development. All the waiting-hall furniture is part of a series of street furniture.
