V ienna is not a big but a cosmopolitan city. For me, the incomparable charm lies in
the contrast between the centuries-old tradition, modern influences, and the proxi-
mity to wonderful nature. It's a pleasure to stroll through the different Gräzel (districts)
and stay in one of the coffee houses, so to speak the extended living room of the
Viennese. The proximity to the Vienna Woods and its Heurige (traditional taverns opera-
ted by winegrowers) also contributes to the high quality of life. During the winter months,
a visit to one of the numerous balls is an unforgettable experience.
Saturday: Through the city centre into the ball night
r 09:00 – After arriving at Schwechat Airport (1) — Terminal 1A was completed in 2005
according to plans by Baumschlager Eberle — we have a wonderful breakfast at
Stadthotel Daniel (2). In 2012, Atelier Heiss Architekten converted the Hoffmann-La
Roche Building (1962) by Georg Lippert and Roland Rohn into a hotel.

bolises the hub function of the city in the centre of Europe. Key buildings in the new
district are “Erster Campus”, built by Henke Schreieck, the Park Apartments at the
Belvedere by Renzo Piano, and the high-rise ensemble The Icon (4), which we developed
in cooperation with JSWD Architekten. (1) Flughafen Wien-Schwechat www.viennaairport.com

hardly been changed to date. (8) Rudolf Scheer & Söhne Bräunerstraße 4, www.scheer.at

Sunday: Viennese underworld, rt and pleasure
r 11:00 – Today we follow the traces of Orson Welles: The Third Man Tour (15). Reservation
required, warm clothes and sturdy footwear recommended. The dark, ramified canal
system, which became world-famous thanks to a film noir, is an incomparable experience.
r 13:00 – "Wining Dining Shopping" is the motto when visiting the Wein & Co flagship
store (16) at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, which our office completed in 2016.
r 15:00 – Lovers of contemporary art should visit the Belvedere 21 (17). Constructed in
1958 by Karl Schwanzer as Austrian Pavilion for the Expo 58 in Brussels, the building was
moved to Vienna in 1962 and opened as a museum. Adolf Krischanitz, one of
Schwanzer’s students, was entrusted with its renovation in 2007. Since November 2011,
the transparent building serves as extension of the Belvedere Art Museum.
r 17:00 – We have a farewell drink in the legendary American Bar (18), also called
Kärntner Bar, designed by Adolf Loos in 1907; because of its 27 m2, it is often referred to
as the most comfortable matchbox in the world.
