missioned with this project. Completed in 1913 and comprising a restaurant, several ex-
hibition rooms and a bowling alley, the building quickly gained in importance, especially
for the citizens of the federal state. However, during the Second World War, this building
was also destroyed in 1944, except for its striking dome. In spite of all this, it was decided
in the years following the war to reconstruct the art building, and Paul Bonatz and Gün-
ther Wilhelm were commissioned with its reconstruction. Paul Bonatz died during the
planning phase, so that Günther Wilhelm completed the reconstruction on his own and
also added a 35 by 35 metre column-free square hall, which is now home to the Würt-
tembergischer Kunstverein.

An architecture forum complements the new trio

My design is based on the idea of changing the existing building as little as possible and
adding the architecture forum as a new, third element to the art building and the square
hall to create a coherent trio. The current driveway leading down to the underground car
park, which is not an attractive access situation, will be built over, thereby creating a new,
more inviting entrance area. The existing connecting section will be widened and thus
will continue to serve as a circulation area and foyer for the three different structures.
Through the connecting structure, a wide staircase, which is located between the qua-
drangular hall and the architecture forum with a joint-like appearance, leads to the ba-
sement, which accommodates the lecture hall, cloakrooms and the archive. The archi-
tecture forum itself has an elongated rectangular floor plan and offers space for a model
of the city on the ground floor. Additional exhibition areas for student projects or exhibi-
tions of competition entries are intended to provide the general public with an insight

first floor. The individual floors always follow the same layout, so that the exhibition
areas are located in the northern sections and the more private, jointly usable rooms ad-

The focus is directed towards the exhibits

Gallery situations and large window areas located in front provide all building sections
with natural lighting. The recessed rooms underneath are also naturally lit by the daylight
entering from above, but are not exposed to direct daylight — this provides perfect con-
ditions for a library, film and lecture rooms. On the fifth floor there is a multifunctional
room that can be used for external events and exhibitions as well as a viewing room.
Due to its elevated location, it affords an excellent view over the palace garden and the
adjacent cultural mile. In the southern part of the building there is also an espresso bar,
from where visitors can enjoy an impressive view over the roofs of the city centre. Since
the longitudinal sides of the building are facing east and west, the windows are located
on these two sides. The short front sides of the building have no windows at all, as the
necessary development cores are located there. The façade consists of greenish, naturally
patinated copper elements that can be found on many of Stuttgart's cultural buildings.
All interiors, on the other hand, consist of smooth concrete surfaces and raised screed
floors with all the necessary technical installations fitted underneath. This means that
the technical components remain invisible to visitors walking through the exhibition
rooms. In this way — in combination with the reduced, subtle materiality of the interior
design — the focus is directed towards the exhibits.
