T he house I loved most, is the one manufacturer Schminke had built for himself in
Löbau, Saxony", Hans Scharoun said about the house he designed in 1930 for the
noodle producer Fritz Schminke from Löbau. The client demanded "a modern house for
two parents, four children and occasionally one or two guests", whilst his wife wished
plenty of light, air and nature, and the – at that time – three children wanted enough room
to play. The realisation was both extravagant and functional. The curved corpus with ter-
races, exterior staircase and numerous circular porthole-like windows arouse associa-
tions with a ship. This is no coincidence – Scharoun was born in Bremen in 1893 and
grew up in Bremerhaven. Impressions relating to the port city were part of his style and Sie werden Feuer
integrated in many of his buildings and designs: porthole windows, steel stairs and ba- und Flamme sein!
nisters, railing-like balustrades and balconies are typical elements, which were also used
for House Schminke. Generally, Hans Scharoun aimed at a harmonious, vivid and
functional combination of building and landscape. The idea behind this was to "organi-
cally" develop the form from the internal function. The building site Scharoun had to deal
with was a park-like terrain next to the noodle factory, on which the client's father has
had a bourgeois landscape garden design realised.
Generous glass areas integrate the garden
The design finally submitted as building application – (re-)planning took in total three
years – proposed an access from the south. The house is accessed on the central level,
the ground floor, via a roofed drive and a porch. Whilst sanitary rooms, the maid's room
and the entrance to the kitchen are positioned on the left, an elongated section accom-
modating the children's rooms, a hall and dining area are positioned to the right of the
entrance. The single functions can be separated with room-high curtains. From the cir-
culation axis, single-fight stairs lead through the two-storey hall to the gallery, from where
guestroom, bedrooms and the bathroom are accessible. The living area can be connected
to or separated from the hall with large glass or wood elements. That way, the living areas
of playing, hall, dining, living and conservatory merge into one another. Generous glass
areas integrate the garden and nature as an extended living room on all sides. CREATE BEYOND CONVENTION
