A usgeklügelt: Auf dem höchsten Punkt des Can Ruti Campus bei Barcelona thront
das Zentrum für Vergleichende Medizin und Bioimaging von Katalonien. Das
Gebäude ist damit Teil einer Gruppe renommierter biomedizinischer Bildungs- und
Forschungseinrichtungen. Dabei wird es nicht nur den hohen Anforderungen an nach-
haltige, auf ethischen Kriterien beruhende Forschung gerecht, sondern auch seiner
anspruchsvollen Lage: An den Campus grenzt ein Nationalpark mit einer hügeligen
Topografie. Der konkave Baukörper mit seiner naturbelassenen Holzlamellenfassade
reagiert auf diese natürliche Begebenheit und verschmilzt förmlich mit dem Hang, auf
dem er liegt. Das sichtbare Gebäudevolumen wurde möglichst gering gehalten. Es ist
über einen gepflasterten Vorplatz erreichbar und umgibt diesen wie eine schützende
Hand. Die Labore, die klimatische Stabilität erfordern, liegen in den unteren Gebäude-
teilen, die sich den Abhang hinabent wickeln. Ein weiterer Zugang auf einer tieferen
Ebene gewährleistet getrenntes Betreten von Laboren und Vorlesungsräumen. Auch die
Energieeffizienz ist beachtenswert: Kompakte Kubatur, hohe thermische Leistung der Fas-
saden, Klimaanlagen mit Luftrückgewinnung, sogar eine Regenwasseraufbereitungsan-
lage gehört dem Komplex an. Das Gebäude passt sich also nicht nur der Geländeto-
pografie, sondern auch seiner Zielgruppe an: Smarte Architektur für smarte Köpfe. ck

S ophisticated: The Comparative Medicine and Bioimage Centre of Catalonia is
prominently situated on the highest point of the Can Ruti Campus near Barce-
lona. The building is thus part of a group of renowned biomedical education and re-
search institutions. Not only does it meet the high standards of sustainable research
based on ethical criteria, but also the requirements of its demanding location: the
campus directly borders on a national park with a hilly topography. The concave
building with its untreated wooden lamella façade responds to this natural environ-
ment and literally merges with the slope on which it is located. The visible building
volume was designed to be as small as possible. It is accessible via a paved fore-
court, which surrounds it like a protective hand. The laboratories, which require sta-
ble climatic condition, are accommodated in the lower parts of the building, which
extend down the slope. A further entrance on a lower level ensures separate access
to laboratories and lecture rooms. The noteworthy energy efficiency is achieved
through a compact cubature with high thermal performance of the façades, air con-
ditioning systems with air recovery and even a rainwater treatment plant as part of
the complex. The building therefore adapts not only to the topography of the terrain,
but also to its target group: smart architecture for smart minds.
