U rsprünglich lebten die Schwestern des Heiligen Kreuzes in Ingenbohl in einer
Krankenhausanlage von Architekt Bruno und Decio Brunoni aus den 1940er- und
1960er-Jahren inmitten der Weinberge mit Blick auf den Lago Maggiore. Nach der
Schließung der Klinik wurde eine neue Unterbringung der Nonnen für ihren Lebens-
abend notwendig: Haus Sant'Agnese findet sich oberhalb der historischen Klinik und
ist als reines Kloster konzipiert, das zwischen einem Zitronenhaus aus dem 19. Jahr-
hundert und den bestehenden Gartenanlagen terrassiert in den Hang gebaut wurde.
Der Klosterzugang erfolgt über die Straße oberhalb des Neubaus und führt über einen
lang gestreckten Dachgarten und eine Treppe in die untere Etage, auf einen Platz, der
von drei Seiten durch die Kapelle, den Bibliotheksriegel und den Wohntrakt umschlos-
sen ist. Im Kontrast zum Platz mit seinem offenen Blick über den See lässt das separate
Kapellenvolumen nur über kleine Fensterausschnitte Tageslicht nach innen und kon-
zentriert sich mit seiner feingliedrigen Eichenholzverkleidung ganz auf sich selbst und
die innere Einkehr. Der Wohntrakt indessen umschließt einen Heilkräutergarten. Die
Zellen der Nonnen sind hier direkt aneinandergereiht und zum Garten hin über eine
gemeinschaftsstiftende Enfilade erschlossen. Rückzug finden die Schwestern jeweils in

O riginally, the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Ingenbohl lived in a hospital complex
which had been designed by Bruno Brunoni and his son Decio Brunoni in the
1940s and 1960s and was located in the midst of vineyards with a view of Lake
Maggiore. After the closure of the hospital, it became necessary to find new accom-
modation where the nuns could spend their twilight years: Sant’Agnese House is
found above the historic clinic and is designed purely as a convent, built in a terra-
ced way into the hillside between a 19th century lemon house and the existing
gardens. Access to the monastery is via the street above the new building and leads
through an elongated roof garden and down a staircase to the lower level and in a
square enclosed on three sides by the chapel, the library wing and the residential
wing. In contrast to the square with its magnificent open view across the lake,
the separate chapel volume lets daylight in only through small window openings
and, with its delicate oak panelling, is focussed entirely on itself and on inner
contemplation. The residential wing, in turn, encloses a medicinal herb garden. The
cells of the nuns are lined up directly next to each other and are accessible from
