Mit Pauken und Trompeten wurde im vergangenen Sommer in Los
Angeles das Thomas-Mann-Haus als Residenz der Bundesrepublik
Deutschland für Intellektuelle eröffnet. Die Architekturhistorikerin Dr.
Lilian Pfaff lebt seit 2007 in Los Angeles und arbeitet aktuell an einem
Buch über den Architekten des Hauses Julius Ralph Davidson. Sie
nimmt uns mit zurück in jene Zeit, als der deutsche Schriftsteller mit
seiner Familie ins Exil in die USA geht und sich von Davidson ein
Domizil im Stil der kalifornischen Moderne bauen lässt.

The red carpet was rolled out last summer when the Thomas-Mann-
House was reopened in Los Angeles as a residence for intellectuals
from the German Federal Republic. The architectural historian Dr
Lilian Pfaff has been living in Los Angeles since 2007 and is currently
working on a book about the building’s architect, Julius Ralph
Davidson. She takes us back to the time when the German writer
went into exile with his family to the USA and commissions Davidson
to build him a resdence in the style of Californian modernism.
