2 In der Gemeinde Ablain-Saint-Nazaire liegt der größte französische Soldaten -
friedhof aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg, Notre-Dame-de-Lorette. Benannt wurde er
nach einer im Krieg zerstörten Kirche aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, deren Ruine bis heute
auf dem Gelände steht. An die Schlachten, die dort im Ersten Weltkrieg ausgetragen
wurden, erinnert das 52 Meter hohe Mémorial de Notre-Dame-de-Lorette in der Mitte
des Friedhofs. Neben der bereits vorhandenen Gedenkstätte wurde zum hundertjähri-
gen Gedächtnis der dritten Schlacht von Artois ein Mahnmal für die Gefallenen aller
Natio nali täten errichtet. Als Symbol für Einheit und Ewigkeit und als Monu ment des
Friedens schuf der Architekt Philippe Prost den „Ring der Erinne rung“, einen ellipsen-
förmigen Baukörper, der sich mit 328 Meter Umfang über einen Hügel er streckt. Das
horizontale Band aus dunklem Beton liegt zu zwei Dritteln auf der Erde auf, um dann
über dem abschüssigen Gelände fast 60 Me ter weit auszukragen. Mit dieser Auskra -
gung soll die Fragilität des Friedens ver deutlicht werden. Im Inneren des Rings reflek-
tieren 500 vergoldete Metallplatten das Sonnenlicht. Auf ihnen sind alle Namen der
knapp 600.000 gefallenen Soldaten eingraviert – ob sie als Verbündete oder als Fein -

from the 16th century which was destroyed during the war and whose ruins are still
found on the site. The 52 metres high Mémorial de Notre-Dame-de-Lorette in the cen-
tre of the cemetery reminds of the battles fought there during the First World War.In
addition to the already existing memorial site and on the occasion of the centenary
of the Third Battle of Artois, a memorial for those killed in action of all nationalities
was constructed. As a symbol of unity and eternity and as a monument to peace,
architect Philippe Prost designed the “Ring of Remembrance”, an elliptic construc-
tion with a circumference of 328 metres and extending over a hill. The horizontal
band of dark concrete rests two thirds on the ground and then cantilevers almost 60
metres over the sloping terrain. This overhang is to emphasize the fragile nature of
peace. Inside the ring, 500 golden metal panels reflect the sunlight. The names of
the almost 600,000 soldiers killed are engraved on the panels – regardless of
whether theydied as allies or as enemies: With the names arranged in alphabetical
order, the memorial unites those killed in action in this region, independent of their
nationality, rank or religion.
