NEW AG
IN MÖNCHENGLADBACH
Back to the future? Or would it be better to work in the
here and now, in the flesh, making eye contact? This
could be the motto of the inviting space offered by the
employer NEW AG in Mönchengladbach. NEW not only
supplies around 450,000 customers with electricity,
160,000 with gas and 100,000 with water, but also brings
a very different, special energy into the home.
W here do “good” ideas come from, how can innovation be made
possible at all, in what kind of environment can thoughts roam
free? And what does productive and efficient work ultimately mean? A
positive, energetic environment and a good working atmosphere defini-
tely pay off for everyone. In this case, it should be in balance, the energy
field of give and take between the employer and the employees. The
interdisciplinary team bkp, consisting of architects, interior designers
and communication scientists, has implemented far more than just new
colours, materials and room units in the by now completely renova-
ted existing building. The team members have created a new mindset
that manages to promise both happiness and success. Concentrated,
focused, protected working is made possible, as are communicative,
cooperative and group-dynamic activities. It should be “worthwhile”
again to make one’s way out of the home office and into a community
where face-to-face exchange and collaboration create value in both an
economic and human sense. The use of the CI colours, berry and blue,
highlights special areas such as the Smart Energy Lab, thereby radiating
the energy that they want to release in their users: creativity, agility,
innovative strength. The space, like the thoughts, remains in flux; furni-
ture and fixtures are movable, extendable seating elements and foldab-
le tables enable the rooms to be used in a variety of ways. Various think
tanks offer opportunities to retreat and create spontaneously usable
communication zones. The actual conversion process on site required
employees to be flexible in both the literal and figurative sense. The
comprehensive structural measures for the core- and pollutant remedia-
tion and the fire-protection upgrade were carried out floor by floor while
the company was in operation. The very elementary structural changes
to the “new” working environment were introduced sensitively into the
corporate culture, which contributed significantly to the acceptance of
the concept. Transparency in entrepreneurial activity also creates trust,
both internally and externally. And, as here, it enables a broad and
