D iagonale und Vertikale, Alt und Neu, Kontinuität und Unterbrechung: Die Insze-
nierung von Gegensatzpaaren und Flächengeometrien gehört, wie ein Blick in
das Projektportfolio offenbart, zu den leitenden Entwurfsparametern der Architekten
von Castroferro. Kürzlich hat das Planerduo dementsprechend ein lang verwaistes
Gebäude im Fischereihafen des nordspanischen Vigo revitalisiert. Alle ursprüngli-
chen Fassaden des zweigeschossigen Riegels wurden entfernt, das erhaltene Beton-
skelett aus den 1970er-Jahren zur Hafenseite hin durch eine zeitgemäß gerasterte
und großflächig verglaste Fassade mit vier auskragenden Erkern verhängt. Rück- und
giebelseitig hat man eine Keramikverkleidung vorgesetzt. Das Motiv gefalteter Flä-
chen – am Außenbau schon in Form eines umgekehrten Satteldachs angezeigt – wird
innen durch sich überschneidende und gefaltete Treppenwangen-, Wand- und De-
ckenflächen aufgegriffen. Geschmeidige Eichenholzoberflächen werden jäh durch-
schnitten von der Rauheit der konservierten Tragstruktur; ihre brutale Anmutung
wird als raumbildendes Stilmittel eingesetzt. Und doch ist der industrielle Charakter
vor allem dem Außenbau erhalten geblieben. In den Büroräumen des hier unterge-
brachten Hafenamts herrscht indes – der allumfassenden, dem Schiffsbau entlehnten
Holzvertäfelung sei Dank – ein beinahe bootskojenhaftes Ambiente.

D iagonal and vertical, old and new, continuity and interruption: the scenic presen-
tation of pairs of opposites and surface geometries is one of the guiding design
parameters of the architects at Castroferro, as a glance at their project portfolio reveals.
Recently, the two architects and their team revitalised a long-abandoned building in
the fishing port of Vigo, a city in northern Spain. All the original façades of the elonga-
ted, two-storey structure were removed, and the preserved concrete framework dating
from the 1970s was covered on the harbour side by a contemporary, grid-like and ex-
tensively glazed façade with four projecting bays. At the back and gable sides, a ceramic
cladding has been installed in front. The motif of folded surfaces — already indicated
on the outside in the form of an inverted pitched roof — is taken up on the inside by
overlapping and folded stair stringers, wall and ceiling areas. Smooth oak surfaces are
abruptly interrupted by the roughness of the preserved supporting structure; its brutal
appearance is used as a space-creating stylistic device. Nevertheless, the industrial cha-
racter has been maintained especially for the exterior of the building. Thanks to the all-
embracing wood panelling borrowed from shipbuilding, the offices of the harbour aut-
hority, which is accommodated here, have an almost berth-like atmosphere.
