                                                                                     The new SR Bank headquarters in Stavanger in Norway
                                                                                     designed by Helen & Hard and SAHAA ranks among the
                                                                                     largest timber constructions in Europe. The up to seven
                                                                                     storeys high office building not only proves a new self-
                                                                                     image as well as a new interpretation of the task of buil-
                                                                                     ding banks but also of how the atmospheric qualities of
                                                                                     wood can benefit multi-storey inner-city workplaces.



                                                                                     H   elen & Hard love building and experimenting with wood. The
                                                                                         Norwegian architectural office has already proved this with
                                                                                     a wide variety of building tasks. Among them are – to list just a few
                                                                                     – the private home in Reilstad (2018) clinging to the rocky coast,
                                                                                     the lively school complex in Sauland (2018) or the library-, office-
                                                                                     and apartment building in Samling which has just been completed
                                                                                     this year. All the buildings benefit to a high degree from the unique,
                                                                                     warm and authentic qualities of wood as the natural construction
                                                                                     material. In the banking industry, wood as a constructive building
                                                                                     material is still an absolute novelty. With the SR Bank in the former

                                                                                     her with SAHAA have just recently been able to set an example of
                                                                                     the       image change in the banking industry. It was the goal of the
                                                                                     client to offer the employees a healthy and inspiring work climate of
                                                                                     natural materials. The up to seven storeys high building in Bjergsted
                                                                                     Park   not only has an interior construction of a wide variety of
                                                                                     woods but also a load-bearing timber structure of glued-wood- and
                                                                                     cross-laminated plywood trusses. The glazed building has been de-
                                                                                     signed        together with the Swiss engineering office Création Holz
                                                                                     of Herrmann Blümer and the Norwegian Degree of Freedom engi-
                                                                                     neering office. The office floors are arranged around a central, light-
                                                                                          i
                                                                                     supply ng atrium. In the same way as the branches of a tree grow
                                                                                     freely, the   galleries of the individual levels also appear to unfold
                                                                                     organically,    almost wild. The atrium looks like a natural landscape
                                                                                     where different seating options invite to sit down. The timber con-
                                                                                     struction is braced by four staircases, floor panels of cross-lamina-
                                                                                     ted timber    and continuous trusses of laminated beech veneer
                                                                                     along the façades on every floor. Organically shaped timber trusses
                                                                                     and visible beech dowels are further characteristic features. Quiet
                                                                                     workstations are    arranged along the façades. A 5.40 metres wide
                                                                                     axis grid creates freely divisible zones. This is intended to ensure a
